Kate McKinnon honors Ellen DeGeneres with teary speech at the 2020 Golden Globes

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 03:52

Typically, it's the winners who capture our hearts on awards night.

But at the 77th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday, presenter Kate McKinnon stole the spotlight with her moving introduction of Carol Burnett Award honoree Ellen DeGeneres. Recalling DeGeneres's decision to come out on Ellen in 1997, McKinnon emphasized the impact DeGeneres' bravery has had on LGBTQ visibility and acceptance.

"[DeGeneres] risked her entire life and her entire career to tell the truth, and she suffered greatly for it," McKinnon noted, referencing the cancelation of DeGeneres's sitcom a year after going public with her sexuality. Read more...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge gives an *absolutely perfect* Obama shoutout after 'Fleabag' win

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 03:42

It might be over forever, but Fleabag's reign continues with a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

Writer and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge accepted the award by thanking BBC and Amazon — plus one more big name.

"Personally I'd like to also thank Obama for putting us on his list," she said, referring to the President's list of his favorite films and TV shows of 2019. "As some of you may know he's always been on mine," she finished with a grin.

"If you don't get that joke, please watch Season 1 of Fleabag really really quickly!" she added.

In Fleabag's first season, the main character's boyfriend dumps her after catching her masturbating to an online video of Barack Obama speaking. It's nice when things come full circle! Read more...

Jason Momoa, we see you wearing a tank top at the Golden Globes

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 03:41

Knives out? More like guns out! Jason Momoa's guns, to be specific.

While most actors at the Golden Globes were turning heads with their elaborate outfits, Momoa drew attention for a very different reason. In a sea of fancy suits and dresses, Momoa was, for some reason, sporting a chill as hell tank top.

Viewers noticed Momoa's unexpected bare arms after Brian Cox won for his role in Succession and walked past the extremely jacked, long-haired, Greek god-esque Aquaman actor and Golden Globes presenter.

Did y’all just see Jason Momoa in a tank top at the #GoldenGlobes? 😂 pic.twitter.com/q3shqHui4w

An Instagram comedian raised $30 million in three days for Australia's unpaid firefighters

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 03:24

A Facebook fundraiser by Australian comedian Celeste Barber has raised over $30 million for New South Wales' volunteer firefighters, providing them with some much-needed help during Australia's bushfire crisis.

Barber went viral back in 2015 with #celestechallengeaccepted, a long-running series in which she humorously recreates celebrities' Instagram posts. Now she is using her 6.5 million Instagram followers for good, asking them to donate to those fighting Australia's catastrophic fires.

"Want to join me in supporting a good cause?" Barber wrote on her Facebook fundraiser page, launched Jan. 3. "I'm raising money for The Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades Donations Fund and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate a lot or a little. Anything helps. Thank you for your support." Read more...

Russell Crowe accepted his Golden Globe with a powerful message about the Aussie fires

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 02:52

Russell Crowe picked up the second statue of the evening at the 2019 Golden Globes, but he wasn't there to actually pick it up.

The Australian actor, as presenter Jennifer Aniston told the audience in a slightly shaky voice, was at home protecting his family, rather than in Hollywood to see if he won Best Actor In A Limited Series for playing the late Fox News boss Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice.

"He sent this statement in case he won," Aniston said:

Russell Crowe’s #goldenglobes message read out by Jennifer Aniston (because he’s in NSW helping fight fires) ➡️ “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science...”pic.twitter.com/1kTeCgoeKR

Ricky Gervais brings up Jeffrey Epstein, Greta Thunberg, and more in cringe-y Golden Globes monologue

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 02:31

Ricky Gervais' return to the Golden Globes hosting gig was meant to invoke the comedy actor's unpredictability and acid wit — but Gervais began his Jan. 5 monologue by declaring that this would be the last time.

"I don't care," he said up front.

As usual, the camera cut throughout his monologue to mixed audience reactions, including a perplexed Tom Hanks and steely Jonathan Pryce.

Gervais did get laughs for the jabs he took at Hollywood collectively, such as telling the entire room they had less education than Greta Thunberg and a cheeky "I know he's your friend" after groans for a joke about Jeffrey Epstein. He also scoffed at his peers who use awards show speeches to spread political awareness. Read more...

Legal minds clapped right back after Trump's absurd war tweet

Mashable - Mon, 01/06/2020 - 00:59

President Donald Trump sent a volatile notice into the Twittersphere Sunday afternoon, giving the 535 members of Congress a heads up that the United States military will "quickly & fully strike back" if Iran attacks the United States.

Legal experts quickly responded to the absurdities and inaccuracies of Trump's tweet, mostly about a violation of the nearly 50-year-old War Powers Act. This law, among other matters, "requires the President to consult with Congress before introducing U.S. armed forces into hostilities or situations where hostilities are imminent, and to continue such consultations as long as U.S. armed forces remain in such situations," according to the Library of Congress.  Read more...

Tesla rival Fisker to sell Ocean SUV for $37,499, and yes, it has a karaoke feature

Mashable - Sun, 01/05/2020 - 21:49

After revealing the Ocean in bits and pieces, Fisker finally gave the world a good look at its electric SUV at an event in Los Angeles on Sunday — and, for some reason, there was karaoke.

The Ocean will cost $37,499 in the United States, or $29,999 after tax credits. That would put it in the same league as the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $35,000. Fisker says the car will have a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge.

Playful Anki robots might be resurrected by new owners

Mashable - Sun, 01/05/2020 - 20:12

The toy robot company Anki shuttered in April 2019, and so did its handheld robot, Vector. That's some 1.5 million little defunct robots, which must connect to the web to update.

But now you, yes you, can now help resurrect, and potentially improve, Vector's software. On Saturday, the tech company Digital Dream Labs announced it had purchased Anki and would be taking over a Kickstarter campaign to move Vector forward, digitally.

"I wanted to let you know that we have purchased Anki's assets and intend to restore the entire platform and continue to develop the robot we all know and love, Vector!," wrote Dream Labs CEO  Jacob Hanchar. Read more...

People sure are having fun covering this one song from 'The Witcher'

Mashable - Sun, 01/05/2020 - 20:07

Toss a coin to your Witcher, won't you?

For anyone who hasn't watched it yet, there's a catchy little tune in The Witcher, a popular new Netflix series based on the writings of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Without getting into story specifics, the show features a singing bard who keeps popping up in the life of Henry Cavill's Geralt.

There's a particular song the bard sings after they first meet that's really resonated in a way that transcends the show's own popularity. It's easy to tell why the first time you hear it. "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher" truly slaps. It's a little ditty that finds its way into your brain and refuses to leave. Read more...

Mashable - Sun, 01/05/2020 - 19:47

All those rumors about Samsung's new TV have officially been confirmed and, yes, the company's latest flagship is bezel-less.

Known as the Q950TS, the 8K QLED TV will make its official debut on the ground at CES 2020.

The reveal comes a bit earlier than expected. It seems someone accidentally published a press release (in Korean) on Samsung's Newsroom with all the juicy details.

Ahh, fun times for Samsung.

Anyways, what we mean by bezel-less is the Q950TS consists of 99 percent display. It features the same Infinity Screen that's on the company's Galaxy smartphones, including the most recent Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series. With a depth of 15mm and a fully flat back, it's also super thin.  Read more...
