Sure, they're small, but that doesn't mean earbuds are a purchase to be taken lightly.

You've probably been listening to music on the go for most of your life. So you know that finding a good pair of earbuds is actually pretty tricky. (I've gone through more in my lifetime than I can count.)

SEE ALSO: The best wireless earbuds: Our top 8 picks for the best sound on the go

Does that mean all earbuds are crap? No. It's simply not true that bass, noise cancellation, and crisp sound can only be found in fancy over-ear headphones. Some of us prefer our headphones to be a little more inconspicuous and portable.

Since it's always good to get a personal recommendation, we did some research and pulled out the best earbuds on Amazon. You'll find earbuds that require a headphone jack or the beloved dongle, wireless Bluetooth earbuds that still have a connecting cord, and the truly wireless earbuds that are as discreet as you can get. Whatever your preference and whatever your price range, you're sure to find some that don't suck.

Earbuds versus earphones: What’s the difference?

The difference between earbuds and earphones is actually pretty simple. Earphones typically fit over your ear — if you've seen the AirPods Max, you've seen what a typical pair of over-ear headphones look like. Earbuds actually fit inside of your ear, like the Powerbeats Pro or AirPods Pro

You can find fantastic versions of either style; your choice will just come down to personal preference. Earphones typically aren't as harsh on your ears, featuring soft earcups to prevent soreness, but earbuds are a lot more compact and funnel audio directly into your eardrums. Earbuds can usually get a better seal for enhanced noise-cancelation, too.

Who it's for:

Anyone that owns an iPhone will appreciate Apple's flagship wireless earbuds, which offer impressive value even considering the relatively high price tag. There are cheaper AirPods available in 2024, but if you care about stellar sound, these are the best earbuds on Amazon for the money.

Why we picked this:

The latest Apple AirPods Pro have some modest improvements over the original Pro model, but the addition of USB-C charging justifies the upgrade in our opinion. And in terms of performance, these earbuds are still the gold standard for Apple customers. They offer impressive battery life, improved active noise cancellation, sweat and water resistance, and all-day battery life (and then some).

Battery life: 30 hours | Active noise cancellation: Yes | Microphone: Yes

$9.99 Save $1.00 Shop Now Who it's for:

If you're not looking for over-the-top sound features and just need a pair to get the job done, these are for you.

Why we picked this:

You shouldn't pick a pair of earbuds simply because of an attractive low price, but that's not to say that quality earbuds can't be 10 bucks. The Panasonic RP-HJE120-PPK In-Ear Stereo Earphones have a super comfy ergo-fit bud that's said to conform to the shape of your ear. If you're not looking for over-the-top sound features and just need a pair to get the job done, these are for you — though some customers also mention that their noise blocking and bass clarity is pretty impressive for such a low price.

Best earbuds with a built-in remote: Apple EarPods with Lightning Connector Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple EarPods with Lightning Connector $15.99 at Amazon
Shop Now Who it's for:

They're a classic for a reason. The earbuds were literally built for your iPhone. Plus, unlike your average pair of $16 earbuds, they do come with an integrated microphone for phone calls.

Why we picked this:

If you want Apple Air Pods but aren't sure you're ready for the commitment yet, the classic Apple EarPods with Lightning Connector are a great, inexpensive substitute in the meantime. These wired, lightning connector earphones were designed by Apple for your Apple device. They work with all devices that have a lightning connector and support iOS 10 or later. This includes iPod touches, iPads, and iPhones.

The Apple EarPods don't have the traditional circular bud design, but the style is actually built around the shape of the ear. Although it depends on the person, they're supposed to be more comfortable than other earbud-style headphones. There were also engineered to increase sound output and decrease sound loss. In layman's terms: the've got great, crisp sound while limiting outside noises.

The most impressive feature of the EarPods is the built-in remote. With the touch of a button, you can change the volume, pause, play, rewind, and skip audio and video, and answer or end calls.

But, don't expect these buds to last a while (only a couple of months). Too many bumps to the old lightning jack and these buds will become super glitchy. If you want a pair of earbuds with great remote-controlled features that you know will work with your Apple device, these pair are for you. We recommend getting them directly from the Apple store because unfortunately there are a lot of scams out there.

Designed for those on the move, the Power Beats Pro totally wireless earbuds are both sweat and water resistant. And with nine straight hours of listening time these earbuds will last long after you leave the gym. Plus, with the charging case you get up to 24 hours of listening.

For music lovers and people who appreciate strong ANC and ambient sound passthrough, these earbuds are our top pick for sound quality.

Why we picked this:

Are you or a loved one a passionate (at times annoying) audiophile? With the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 Earbuds you won't be complaining about glitchy sounds or subpar bass anymore.

These buds are superior when it comes to customizing your audio experience. You can tailor your earbuds to your specifications by downloading the Sennheiser Smart Control app. They have so many customizable features with the built-in equalizer and pre-sets, like Bass Boost and Sound Personalization. There's even a guided listening test to perfect your earbuds.

The Adaptive Noise Cancellation mode lets you block out noises for a more immersive music experience -- without the distractions. But, in case you're worried about being too distracted by your music, Transparency Mode keeps you grounded in the real world. You can specify the sounds you want to be alerted to in noise cancellation mode like traffic or alarms.

Many audiophile reviewers love the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 Earbuds for its incredible play time and impressive, customizable features. If you want earbuds with supreme sound that feel uniquely yours, the iconic Sennheiser's are just what you're lookin for.

Best budget sports earbuds: Stiive Bluetooth Sports Earbuds Opens in a new window Credit: Stiive Stiive Bluetooth Sports Earbuds $18.99 at Amazon

If you need a pair of wireless earbuds for the gym that you can afford to lose, then these affordable buds are a smart pick thanks to IPX7 waterproofing. Sweatproof and equipped with a comfortable ear hook, these little guys are great for vigorous workouts.

Why we picked this:

Hey gym addicts: The Stiive Bluetooth Sports Earbuds are a sweat-resistant, durable pair of earbuds great for all your gym needs.

With the ear-hook and earbud design, you won't have to worry about your earphones falling out during your most strenuous workouts like running, cycling, lifting, and more. They come with four eartip sizes (XS, S, M, and L) to better fit your ear.

These workout headphones can withstand sweat or rain because of the buds' nano-coating protective tech. Not only do they have authentic sound and bass but, these buds also has a CVC6.0 noise-canceling microphone which helps filter out background noise and capture your voice when answering calls.

For a pair of earbuds under $20 with great sound, a secure fit, and sweat-proof design, the Stiive sports earbuds are a great value for gym bros that want to listen while they workout.

Battery life: 16 hours | Active noise cancellation: No | Microphone: No

Best for commuters: Samsung Galaxy Pro Earbuds Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung Galaxy Pro Earbuds $159.99 at Amazon
$199.99 Save $40.00 Shop Now Who it's for:

Samsung's earbuds have everything commuters need for the trek to and from the office (and are great all-rounders in general).

Why we picked this:

The top-of-the-line model from Samsung’s lineup of great quality earbuds, these buds offer a ton of features in two little packages. They’re especially great for taking calls on the go, thanks to call settings including voice detection and background noise reduction that kicks in when you start talking. If you’re just listening to music, a more thorough noise cancellation feature also kicks in to help you tune out when you’re listening to your favorite playlist.

One of our favorite features is Ambient Sound mode, which is a four-level system that lets in different levels of ambient noise from your immediate surroundings, which is great for keeping a bit safer while listening to music and walking or running city streets.

Plus, if you’re a Samsung Galaxy owner, you can pair the two together for cross-device coordination.

The best wireless headphones for every budget

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 19:58
Overview Best overall Sony WH-1000XM4 $348 at Amazon Shop Now Best for Apple users Apple AirPods Max $479.99 at Amazon (Save $69.01) Shop Now Best for style Beats Studio3 $169 at Amazon (Save $180.95) Shop Now Budget pick Sony WH-CH510 $49.99 at Amazon (Save $10) Shop Now

Even though wired headphones have "It" girl status with Gen Z, some of us prefer our headphones to be wireless with Bluetooth connectivity. Plenty of devices don't even have headphone jacks anymore, so going wireless is honestly the easier choice. You don't have to carry around any extra dongles to plug your headphones into your phone.

If you prefer over-ear and on-ear style headphones to earbuds, this is for you. You don't have to worry about headphones being true wireless, because unlike earbuds, headphones don't need to be attached by any unnecessary cords — they're true wireless by nature.

SEE ALSO: The best wireless earbuds: Our top 8 picks for the best sound on the go

Headphones create a natural seal over your ears to block out exterior noise, so even if they aren't noise canceling, they will still do a decent job preventing unwanted sound from interfering with your music or podcast.

We rounded up our favorite wireless headphones based on our own reviews and customer reviews. They range in quality, features, and price, so there's a little something for everyone.

Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM4 Opens in a new window Credit: Sony Sony WH-1000XM4 $348.00 at Amazon
Shop Now Who it's for:

If you have the budget, Sony's XM line offers the best mix of stellar noise-cancellation, comfort, and all-day battery life. Keep in mind there is a newer model available, the XM5 headphones. However, these offer only small improvements, so we recommend saving $50 on the XM4 generation.

Why we picked this:

The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones have superior sound quality and noise cancellation. They're comparable to the Sennheiser PXC 550-II headphones, but have a more stylish look in our opinion — the ear cups are less bulky.

One stand-out feature these Sony headphones have is that they can pick up when you speak or someone is speaking to you and they automatically pause your music. To be honest, this can get a little annoying if you're somewhere surrounded by people talking or you just talk to yourself a lot. But luckily you can turn this feature off in the app.

Battery life: 30 hours | Colors: Black, navy, white | Noise cancellation: Yes

Best for Apple users: Apple AirPods Max Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple AirPods Max $479.99 at Amazon
$549.00 Save $69.01 Shop Now

Read our full review of the AirPods Max headphones.

Who it's for:

Price may be a deterrent, but the AirPods Max are a great pair of headphones for Apple fanatics. Your music has never sounded better, and the immersive spatial audio is incredible for movie buffs.

Why we picked this:

AirPods Pro do a decent job blocking out noise, but they can't compete with the noise cancellation or comfort of the AirPods Max. The sound quality of AirPods Max also outshines the earbuds. The audio is immersive, bass is thumpy, and music won't flatten at high volumes.

Aesthetically, the AirPods Max look cool, but they're massive if you have a smaller head, and they are heavy and uncomfortable for people who wear with glasses. Controls are housed in a Digital Crown, which is like the little wheel on the side of an Apple Watch. You can raise/lower volume, play/pause/answer calls, skip and rewind tracks, and trigger Siri.

We don't love the price, however. Even when they're on sale, they cost well over $450, but you're paying a premium for sound quality and the ineffable Apple cool factor.

Battery life: 20 hours | Colors: Black, navy, silver, mint, red | Noise cancellation: Yes

Best for style: Beats Studio3 Opens in a new window Credit: Beats Beats Studio3 $349.95 at Amazon

Read our full review of the Beats Studio3 headphones.

Who it's for:

These Beats have smooth Bluetooth connection and Apple's powerful W1 chip. For the price, they also have a very impressive battery, with enough juice for listening to your music all day long even with ANC engaged.

Why we picked this:

A few years ago, the Beats Studio3 headphones got an upgrade with Apple's W1 chip, which boosts the Studio3's Bluetooth and battery performance. The Bluetooth improvements allow for a smoother connection (for Android and iOS), so there shouldn't be any signal drops.

Adaptive noice cancellation technology helps quiet the outside world, while audio calibration keeps things clear. The battery will last you about 22 hours with noise cancellation turned on, and up to 40 hours with ANC turned off.

Battery life: 40 hours | Colors: Black, navy, silver, red | Noise cancellation: Yes

Budget pick: Sony WH-CH510 Opens in a new window Credit: Sony Sony WH-CH510 $49.99 at Amazon
$59.99 Save $10.00 Shop Now Who it's for:

There's no noise cancellation, but for the price, these are quality headphones with a strong battery.

Why we picked this:

If you're OK with forgoing noise cancellation, the Sony WH-CH510 wireless headphones can save you some serious cash. These affordable headphones are best for casual listening and won't blow you away with ultra-impressive sound quality, but they are still Sony, so the sound quality isn't bad by any means.

The headphones can get a little uncomfortable after extended wear, and they're on-ear headphones, so your ears may get sore. Even as on-ear wireless headphones, they do create a decent seal for your music.

Battery life: 35 hours | Colors: Black | Noise cancellation: No

SEE ALSO: The best headphones for 2024 (and why they made our list) Are AirPods the best option?

Yes and no. AirPods are great, especially the new AirPods Pro, but even when they're discounted (you can usually find them for under $200 at Amazon), they're expensive compared to competitors. They're definitely a good one stop solution thanks to being so convenient to set up with your iPhone and they fit the Apple aesthetic perfectly. However, if you're keen to search around and spend a little longer setting up, there are better options out there depending on what you need your headphones for.

What are the best headphones for iPhone?

Think of the main reason why you want new headphones. Are you going to be using them while you travel a lot? At home listening to music? While exercising? We’ve looked at a number of different scenarios when you want to use headphones and figured out the best headphones or earphones for you and your needs. After extensive testing of the best headphones and earbuds, we've gathered our favorites for iPhone users below.

Read our review of the AirPods Pro (Gen 2) wireless earbuds.

Who it's for:

It should be no surprise that the best earbuds for iPhones come from Apple itself. If you have the budget and simply want a no-fuss, easy-to-connect option for your iPhone, then you really won't do better than the latest AirPods Pro. The newest AirPods Pro can even share a USB-C charger with your new iPhone 15.

Why we picked this:

This selection is likely self-explanatory, but let us explain anyway. Apple's premium wireless earbuds have a lot of excellent features for the price: Active noise cancellation, 30 hours of total battery life, and IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance. You can also choose between USB-C charging or wireless charging. However, for iPhone users in particular, these earbuds are a no-brainer thanks to how well they play with iPhones and the entire iOS universe of products.

Bear in mind that while they're the best earbuds for iPhones, they aren't the best wireless earbuds overall. As Stan Schroeder wrote in his review, "Apple has improved the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) in many small ways. They sound great and the noise cancelation is stellar, but if you already have the original AirPods Pro, the new ones are not an essential upgrade."

Battery life: 30 hours | Active noise cancellation: Yes

Who it's for:

Need a pair of solid, dependable wireless earbuds? These older-model AirPods won't let you down. They have all the connectivity benefits of the AirPods Pro and with strong sound. However, if you can't live without active noise cancellation, then these aren't the buds for you. Still, it's hard to argue with that price tag.

Why we picked this:

When these AirPods were first released in 2019, Mashable Tech Writer Raymond Wong wrote, "Hands-down, they are the best wireless earbuds to get if you use an Apple device." We can't say that in 2024. Even so, these earbuds still offer above average sound quality compared to similarly priced buds and impressive battery life. Best of all, you can usually find them on sale for under $100.

Battery life: 24 hours | Active noise cancellation: No

Best for work: Beats Solo Pro Opens in a new window Credit: Karissa Bell / Mashable Beats Solo Pro $279.95 at Amazon

Read our full review of the Beats Solo Pro headphones.

Who it's for:

As part of the Apple extended family, Beats headphones have the same connectivity benefits as AirPods Max headphones, only without the $500+ price tag. If comfort is your top priority above all, we have found the fit of these headphones a bit snug, but the sound quality is excellent. As we noted in our original review, "Active noise cancellation is far better than you'd expect for on-ear headphones 22 hours of battery life."

Why we picked this:

At work, you want to be able to effortlessly switch on active noise cancellation when you're in the zone and need to block out your co-workers, and then easily switch it off when you need to tune in. The Beats Solo Pro headphones do a great job with both modes, and the sound quality is just as high too. We've found them to be a bit of a snug fit, but when you need to be able to switch back and forth between music and your co-workers, there's little better out there.

Finally, if you prefer black headphones to the white cans available at Amazon, you can still find these headphones in black at Walmart.

Battery life: 22 hours | Active noise cancellation: Yes

Most comfortable headphones: Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 Opens in a new window Credit: Plantronics Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 $152.10 at Amazon
Shop Now Who it's for:

Do you prize comfort above all? Then we can heartily recommend these cans, which combine active noise cancellation with a comfy fit that holds up well to all-day wear.

Why we picked this:

Many headphones and earphones can become uncomfortable after extended periods of time using them. The Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 buck that trend by being immensely comfortable to wear, no matter how long you're listening. While they're not the newest of headphones out there, their sound quality is still great for the price and they offer active noise cancellation to further improve what you're listening to. There's an option for listening to them via wires, which may be a benefit when you're not using your phone. Whatever the method, the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 sound great while cushioning your ears.

Ever since the launch of the Steam Deck in 2022, new handheld gaming PC announcements have been pretty consistent. Asus put out the ROG Ally not long after the Steam Deck in June of 2023, and MSI just recently announced the Claw for 2024. Lenovo even threw its hat into the ring with the Legion Go last fall, and we thought it held up really well to other handheld consoles of its kind.

If you're looking to pick up a handheld PC, the Lenovo Legion Go is actually on sale for $50 off the original price at Best Buy (it's the upgraded 1TB SSD version, too). Just be quick if you want one — the deal expires in just a few days on March 3.

SEE ALSO: Gaming starter kit: All the gear you need to play like a real gamer

The Lenovo Legion Go is one of the better handheld gaming consoles to come out so far. In our testing, we found that it beat the Steam Deck in multiple categories, including performance, battery life, display quality, and the operating system (it's a bit more expensive, though). It's also the first handheld PC of its kind to feature detachable controllers à la the Nintendo Switch, and has a microSD card slot for storage expansion opportunities. As a bonus, you'll get a hardshell carrying case so you can bring the device around with you.

If you want to access your entire PC gaming library on a handheld and you want it to look great, don't second-guess buying a Lenovo Legion Go — especially when you can get one on sale.

If you plan on traveling to the see the eclipse or are lucky enough to live in its path, you'll need to wear protective glasses to enjoy the sight while keeping your eyes safe. Thanks to Warby Parker, your pair of eclipse glasses could be free.

Stop by any Warby Parker store across the country, starting on April 1, to score free solar eclipse glasses, while supplies last. Check the eyeglass retailer's location map to find the store closest to you. Warby Parker says the offer extends to up to two pairs per family.

If you plan to watch either in the path of totality or the partial eclipse as it happens, you'll want to be wearing ISO-certified eclipse glasses, which indicates they pass international safety standards. Warby Parker's free glasses carry the ISO-certification and are manufactured by American Paper Optics.

Warby Parker has become one of the most popular eyeglass retailers, offering both in-store and online options that start at $95, including prescription lenses. The brand's unique home try-on option makes buying eyeglasses or sunglasses a legitimate option.

If your plans on April 8 involve watching any part of the solar eclipse, stop by a Warby Parker store to score free eclipse glasses. Your eyesight will thank you immensely.

Google announces new Chrome features that trigger your FOMO

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 18:51

Google has a three new Chrome features designed to make suggestions more helpful.

On Thursday, the tech giant announced a new way to trigger your FOMO. Plus, Google is enhancing its image search and allowing users to access suggestions despite having a poor connection.

When searching on Chrome, Google Search will populate suggestions of what other people are searching for based on your previous queries. So if you're searching for Dune: Part Two, you might also see that people are searching whether Dune will be two or three movies, whether it's a good film, and most importantly, whether Jason Momoa will make an appearance. (Sorry to Duncan Idaho fans, but he does not.)

Is Jason Momoa in Dune 2? The people need to know. Credit: Google

Google is also adding more image search suggestions to your original query. Previously, as the blog post says, image suggestions would show up if you had a specific product in mind. But now, Chrome will populate "helpful images for broader shopping categories and products based on a simpler search," said the announcement.

Last but not least, Chrome is coming to the rescue even when you have bad service. Google has improved on-device capabilities to give you search suggestions if your signal is low. This also means more search suggestions when you're in incognito mode.

The expanded image search functionality and improved connectivity are only available via Android and iOS — not desktop.

They're not the most exciting features, but Google has its sights on bigger things for Chrome. Namely, adding generative AI features for organizing tabs, summarizing articles, and drafting messages for reviews and comments. These features aren't live yet, but are in testing mode or expected to be released in the comings months. Keep an eye out for more to come.

Golden Corral finally admits data breach. Here’s what got exposed.

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 17:12

A popular U.S. dining institution ran into some data security problems last summer.

In a press release issued on Thursday, Golden Corral confirmed a data breach that happened on Aug. 15 of last year. The buffet chain, which has locations in 43 states, said that personal information belonging to current and former employees, as well as their dependents and beneficiaries, was accessed by outside actors.

The restaurant claimed that there was no evidence of this data being misused as of yet.

SEE ALSO: Tumblr users, here's what to know about Tumblr selling your data to OpenAI and MidJourney

According to Golden Corral, the compromised data includes the following:

  • Names

  • Social Security numbers

  • Bank account information

  • Medical information

  • Driver's license numbers

  • Usernames and passwords

  • Health insurance information

That's a lot of information — and it doesn't help that Golden Corral apparently missed two deadlines: Jan. 24 to find address information for affected victims and Feb. 16 to start notifying people who may have had their data accessed.

"While Golden Corral is unaware of the misuse of any personal information impacted by this event, individuals are encouraged to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft by reviewing account statements and explanations of benefits for unusual activity," the press release said. "Any suspicious activity should be reported to the appropriate insurance company, health care provider, or financial institution."

It's probably not a great sign that simply having a job opens you up to so much potential data insecurity, huh?

‘Música’ trailer encapsulates the main character's torment

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 13:08

It’s hard to encapsulate a whole movie in a trailer without ruining it, but whoever edited the Música trailer infuses the whole thing with the rhythm underpinning its main character's torment.

Set in Newark, New Jersey, it’s written, directed, and starring YouTuber Rudy Mancuso, who is plagued by sound every day of his life, turning every tiny moment into a rhythm. He meets and falls for Isabella (Camila Mendes) while navigating pressure from his family and figuring out a way to harness his synesthesia.

'Dune: Part Two': What does Paul tell Baron Harkonnen?

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 12:17

One of the biggest changes Dune: Part Two makes from Frank Herbert's original Dune is the fate of Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård).

In both versions of the story, the Baron perishes by the hand of a member of the Atreides family. In Herbert's Dune, that honor falls to Alia Atreides, Paul's two-year-old sister who has all the skills and abilities of a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother. But given that she isn't even born yet in Dune: Part Two — the adult version of Alia is played by Anya Taylor-Joy, though! — Paul (Timothée Chalamet) winds up killing the Baron instead.

SEE ALSO: 'Dune: Part Two' review: Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi masterpiece soars, then screams to a halt

The murder occurs at the end of the film, after Paul and his Fremen troops have cornered Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken) and the Harkonnens on Arrakis. By this point, the Baron has been cut loose from his medical machinery and is crawling up the stairs to the Emperor's throne. Paul storms in and greets the Baron as his grandfather (a revelation he learned after drinking the Water of Life) before stabbing him in the neck with a Fremen Crysknife.

As he kills the Baron, he tells him, "You die like an animal." It's a brutal, dehumanizing statement. But there's more to it than just plain insult.

Paul's last words to the Baron link back to the Gom Jabbar. Timothée Chalamet in "Dune: Part Two." Credit: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

A large element of the world of Dune is the Gom Jabbar, a poisoned needle the Bene Gesserit use to test a subject's humanity. In the first Dune, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling) administers the test on Paul. In Dune: Part Two, Lady Margot Fenring (Léa Seydoux) administers it on Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler).

SEE ALSO: How is 'Dune: Part 2' different from the book?

During the test, a Bene Gesserit holds the Gom Jabbar to the neck of the subject, who places their hand in a box that inflicts immense pain on them. If they are able to control their impulses and keep their hand in the box, they will live, having proven their willpower and humanity. But if they act on instinct and withdraw their hand because of the pain, they will die at the tip of the Gom Jabbar. For the Bene Gesserit, anyone unable to control their impulses is an animal — and also harder to control. That's why they put possible Kwisatz Haderachs like Paul and Feyd through the test: an animal should not have that kind of power.

That brings us to Paul and the Baron. In calling the Baron "an animal," Paul is insinuating that the Baron is more instinct-driven than intelligent. There's also a more literal level to the line: Paul stabs the Baron in the neck, right where a Gom Jabbar would hit.

But wait, there's more! Paul's line also alludes to the Baron's death in the book. When Alia kills the Baron in Herbert's Dune, she pricks him with the Gom Jabbar, meaning he dies exactly like any "animal" who failed the Bene Gesserit's test of humanity.

While I still think we were robbed of seeing a two-year-old murder the Baron in Dune: Part Two, Paul's line still makes for a solid nod to the Gom Jabbar, and to Alia's use of it in Dune. To twist a phrase from Herbert, we're getting meanings within meanings within meanings.

Dune: Part Two is now in theaters.

If you love food, you'll love the documentary 'Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros'

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 12:00

Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros is every food lover and documentary lover's dream.

The 44th documentary from filmmaker Frederick Wiseman (City Hall, Titicut Follies) takes us behind the scenes of a trio of French restaurants run by the Troisgros family. One of them, Le Bois sans Feuilles, has held three Michelin stars for 55 years; this is where the bulk of Menus-Plaisirs takes place. What follows is a transfixing journey through good food and the artistry that creates it.

SEE ALSO: 'Dune: Part Two' review: Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi masterpiece soars, then screams to a halt Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros is a food documentary and family story rolled into one. Credit: Zipporah Films

Chef César Troisgros is the fourth generation of the Troisgros family to head up Le Bois sans Feuilles. His younger brother Léo is the chef at La Colline du Colombier, one of the family's other lauded restaurants. Their father Michel oversees the restaurants, while their mother Marie-Pierre runs the Troisgros hotel. It's a family business through and through. Even though their interactions in the film are mostly work-focused, they still provide a telling snapshot of what makes the Troisgros tick. An early discussion where Léo and Michel debate whether almonds have a place in a new sauce carries elements of father-son familiarity, but also the kind of tension that arises when you want to impress or even prove your boss wrong.

SEE ALSO: 'The Gentlemen' review: A messy rollercoaster that's too much filler, not enough killer

The Troisgros family is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Menus-Plaisirs. Wiseman spends quite a bit of time in the kitchen of Le Bois sans Feuilles, following chefs as they prepare for service early in the morning, then pick up the pace as customers arrive. True to Wiseman's usual style, there is no voiceover, music, or any guiding text. He just situates us in the controlled chaos of the kitchen and lets us observe the care that goes into each dish.

And what dishes they are! Between frothing sauces, carefully butchered meats, and delicate desserts, Menus-Plaisirs is a feast for the senses. Without any musical accompaniment, you're sucked into the sounds and rhythms of the kitchen, be they the chopping of knives or the quiet discussions between chefs. To watch Menus-Plaisirs is to be held rapt by the minutiae of the cooking process.

Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros is all about process, process, process. Credit: Zipporah Films

Menus-Plaisirs doesn't just stop at the kitchen, though. This is a comprehensive portrait of the restaurant: Wiseman shows us how staff prepares the dining room for guests and how waiters interact with customers. Most intriguingly, he also takes us to many of the places that the Troigros family sources their food from, like a cattle farm focused on sustainable practices, a local farmers' market, and a cheese cave. Every piece of information enriches those hypnotic cooking scenes. Even if you don't know what a certain ingredient is, or what the final dish will be, you're aware of all the work it took to get it in front of a hungry diner.

Tying into this awareness is Menus-Plaisirs' four-hour runtime (which is not too surprising by Wiseman standards). While the length of the film may initially put you off, it's far more rewarding than it is a barrier for viewing. With each minute that passes, you become more and more conscious of the amount of time that goes into making food at Troisgros — more time than what Wiseman gives us even, seeing as he's collapsed hundreds of hours of footage into this film. The added background on sourcing extends the timeframe further. We're not just looking at cooks, but at an entire food chain, an ecosystem centered around creating edible art. There's a beauty to the final products, but a bittersweetness too: No matter how long it takes to make these dishes, they will be eaten up in a matter of moments.

That might just be the greatest gift Menus-Plaisirs has to offer: It makes you ponder how much time and effort go into every little thing you eat, and every piece of art you take in, be it a film or a book or a painting. It's a reminder to savor and appreciate and think, instead of mindlessly consuming. Even though the vast majority of us will never make it to a Troisgros restaurant, we can still find meaning in their work, and in the astounding work of Wiseman.

Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros is now streaming on PBS.org and the PBS app. It airs March 22 on PBS at 9 p.m. ET.

'The Regime' review: Kate Winslet slays in an otherwise fine satire

Mashable - Fri, 03/01/2024 - 12:00

A nation ruled by Kate Winslet sounds pretty fun on paper, but as HBO's new series The Regime proves, it would actually be a bleak affair.

Granted, it's not Winslet herself ruling, but rather her character, Chancellor Elena Vernham. Elena leads an unnamed Middle European country from her lofty palace (really a converted hotel), tormented by the aspirations of her deceased father and her deep fear of any kind of mold. She's a formidable character brought to life by a formidable actress, but The Regime's satire is too broad to measure up.

Over the course of its six episodes, The Regime charts one year in the decline of Elena's authoritarian government. When it comes to politics, she's juggling an icy relationship with the United States, a desire to annex surrounding land, and protests from cobalt miners and sugar beet farmers. Her personal life is even more of a mess, though. She preserves her long-dead father in a glass box, Lenin-style, and has long, heated conversations with his corpse. Is this just a way of processing her ideas, or does she actually see him talking back?

Elena has also developed an intense paranoia about the very air she breathes, leading her to recruit Corporal Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts) to follow her around and monitor the palace's humidity. Known as a "butcher" for his murder of protesters at a mining site, Herbert has his own set of ideas as to how to placate the working class. As he and Elena grow closer, they fall into a strange dance of manipulation, politics, and maybe even a twisted romance. But Elena's government is wary of Herbert's rise to power, and her people aren't all too fond of her international ambitions. Revolution threatens to erupt at any moment.

Showrunner Will Tracy co-wrote food horror flick The Menu and wrote for Succession, so you'd expect The Regime to feature similar levels of humor and satire. Yet the commentary here casts too wide a net to truly hit home. With little to grab onto besides sugar beets and cobalt, Elena's country loses any kind of specificity, and the same goes for the show's take on politics.

Granted, a large element of The Regime involves Elena's alienation from the people she claims to care about. She remains holed up in her hotel-palace, doling out speeches where she calls her citizens her "loves" and reminds them how much she'd like to be reunited with them. The message is clear: Of course an autocrat will lose touch with their people when they keep themselves squirreled away in their own world, too focused on maintaining their power to actually govern effectively. And of course the population will rise up in retaliation. Unfortunately, this is as far as The Regime goes.

The Regime does its best to amplify the lunacy of Elena's reign through fast-paced, insult-filled dialogue. But even these lines can feel half-baked, like early drafts of other, better political comedies, like Armando Ianucci's Veep or The Thick of It. They're certainly funny, but like the show's satire, you know it could be better.

Despite its thinness, Winslet still makes a meal of The Regime and the role of Elena — one that's a total 180 turn from her more grounded work in another HBO limited series, Mare of Easttown. Here, Winslet alternates between fragile and girl-boss mode, often combining the two when Elena tries to exude power in more vulnerable moments. She's also quite hilarious and absurd, and impressively physically committed. You may just find yourself transfixed by the moments when she begins to lisp, or when she allows her mouth to droop or quirk just so.

All this focus on Elena leaves other characters with little room to breathe. Herbert is mostly threatening and violent, with a hint of psychosexual angst. Elena's governmental lackeys often seem interchangeable. Other characters, such as Andrea Riseborough's put-upon head-of-house, Agnes, have potential for affecting arcs. Yet The Regime often compresses their stories to bite-sized moments or fails to explore them further. The show may be named The Regime, but it's less interested in the inner workings of a whole government than it is in the character of Elena. And that's fine when you have an actress and a performance as towering as Winslet's. Just don't step too far out of her shadow, though. That's when the cracks in The Regime begin to show.

The Regime premieres March 3 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
