The 2024 Met Gala was filled with floral fashion. The internet had thoughts.

Mashable - 2 hours 57 min ago

The 2024 Met Gala kicked off on Monday night, with a slew of celebrities descending upon New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art to show off their fits. Meanwhile, a slew of internet denizens descended upon social media to judge said fashion.

This year's Met Gala theme was "The Garden of Time," complimenting the museum's spring exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Though the name understandably evokes images of fairy tale princesses, the exhibit will actually focus on fashion throughout history.

SEE ALSO: What do we lose when influencers replace journalists on the red carpet?

"Approximately 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on view, visually united by iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion and a vehicle to examine the cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal," reads the Met's description.

The Gala's theme was specifically inspired by English writer J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story of the same name. "The Garden of Time" follows a noble couple who use crystalline flowers that rewind time to prevent a mob of less fortunate people from reaching their luxurious villa. Of course, this strategy only works for long as their garden grows.

Ballard also wrote a story entitled "Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan," which would have made a very interesting Met Gala theme as well.

In an unintentional parallel, "The Garden of Time" theme gained further relevance in light of nearby protests in support of Palestine. Hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors marched through New York while the Met Gala was underway, beginning around 1.2 miles away at Hunter College and travelling north toward the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the protestors ultimately did not disrupt the Gala, the disaffected proletariat marching toward an extravagant event by the wealthy seems remarkably on the nose considering the plot of Ballard's short story.

The Met Gala's theme offered designers a significant scope for creativity, whether they reached for historical inspiration, alluded to time itself, or relied on tried and true florals. And as always, some were more creative than others.

Met Gala co-host Zendaya prompted a double take with two outfits (not quite Lady Gaga's four but still impressive), wearing first an ocean blue, leaf-clad look by John Galliano for Maison Margiela meant to channel the natural world, then a black vintage Givenchy couture gown with a bouquet headpiece.

"See this? This is how you dress for a theme. A lot of you should be taking notes," said TikTokker @nickycbell.

Entrepreneur Mona Patel was captivating in an Iris Van Herpen gown adorned with moving butterflies, while singer Tyla embodied the sands of time in a dazzling dress from Balmain — complete with an hourglass clutch. "This is what I mean when I say drama," said TikTokker @marissaspagnoli of the gown.

Sydney Sweeney seemed to take inspiration from both flowers and fairytales, arriving in a pale blue Miu Miu ballgown adorned with floral embroidery, while Mindy Kaling's Gaurav Gupta gown was intended to represent a plant's life from bud to wilting blossom. Several attendees drew directly from the time-warping crystal flowers from Ballard's story, including Elle Fanning and Janelle Monáe.

Other designers seemed to stretch the limits of the theme, like high school art students inventing justifications to just do whatever they want. Model Anok Yai looked stunning in a crystal-encrusted blue Swarovski jumpsuit, but tying it to the theme via water in a garden felt like a stretch. Doja Cat's "timeless" white T-shirt was also a fairly unique take on the theme, particularly as she put a wet-look spin on it. The orchid inspiration of Sabrina Carpenter's admittedly incredible Oscar De La Renta dress was also difficult to discern.

Despite some arguably tenuous links to the theme, the women at least looked amazing. In contrast, onlookers have come to expect many of the Met Gala's male attendees to give them nothing, and indeed several failed to serve this year.

Dishonourable mention goes to Alexander Skarsgård for showing up in a plain black Calvin Klein suit, as well as Jerry Seinfeld for his equally uninspiring tuxedo. Hugh Jackman's unimpressive Tom Ford number only scores points for sticking to the time theme, as he reportedly rewore the same tuxedo he donned at his first Met Gala 20 years ago. And Ed Sheeran's blue Stella McCartney outfit was praised by X user @georgia_211 as "Troy Boltons tux from the HSM 3 prom scene back to life."

Fortunately, other men had much more fun with their looks, including fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, actor Jeremy Pope, desaturated chocolate factory owner Barry Keoghan, and as X user @keyon put it, "fresh from the Montague vs capulet battlefield" Bad Bunny in John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

Stray Kids also made their Met Gala debut, becoming the first K-pop group to have all members attend the event. While their red, white, and blue Tommy Hilfiger outfits could definitely have been kicked up a few notches, all eight of them together created a striking capsule fashion show for the label. Other designers would do well to take note.

New Mac malware 'Cuckoo' can take screenshots of your desktop and other creepy actions

Mashable - 3 hours 17 min ago

Mac users, beware. There's a new malware hiding amongst third-party apps that can steal your sensitive data. Everything from your Mac's hardware information, your notes, and saved passwords can be stolen. It can even capture screenshots of your computer while you use it.

This malware has been named Cuckoo by Kandji, an Apple device security company which recently published a report about its discovery. Here are some of the most alarming details about Cuckoo.

Where Cuckoo was found hiding

According to Kandji's report, Cuckoo was initially found packaged with a Spotify music downloader app called "DumpMedia Spotify Music." The app claims to help users rip music off of Spotify so they can directly download the audio file as an MP3.

Upon further investigation, however, Cuckoo was discovered with a number of other third-party music downloader apps and iPhone/Android backup software distributed by websites such as "tunesolo[.]com, fonedog[.]com, tunesfun[.]com, tunefab[.]com."

The report focuses on the DumpMedia Spotify Music app, which is where Cuckoo was initially discovered — and lays out some interesting details. For example, after downloading most legitimate Mac apps distributed outside of Apple's official App Store, a user is usually asked to drag the app from the .DMG file to the computer's Applications folder. However, in the case of the DumpMedia Spotify Music, the user is directed to right-click the app and choose "Open."

From there, the malware starts gathering information from the host device. The Mac user who initiated the download would be none the wiser, however, as Kandji's report notes that the DumpMedia Spotify Music proceeds to install and open in order to obscure the malware.

What does Cuckoo steal?

Once the user installs the DumpMedia Spotify Music app, Cuckoo gets right to work.

According to Kandji, Cuckoo gathers hardware details about the Mac, along with information about installed apps and processes that are currently running on the computer.

Cuckoo can steal a substantial amount of user information from the Mac, too. It pulls data from Apple Notes and messaging apps, including Discord and Telegram.

It can collect Safari web-browsing history and cookies, as well as sensitive data stored in iCloud Keychain. Cuckoo can also grab real-time data, as it can take screenshots without the user being aware that their current screen is being recorded.

Kandji says that the malware can target the older Intel-based Macs as well as the new Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, etc.).

All of the apps, but one, that were discovered to contain Cuckoo malware were registered to a "valid Developer ID of Yian Technology Shenzhen Co., Ltd." Fonedog's developer ID was tied to a developer ID of FoneDog Technology Limited. Kandji believes there are other websites and applications out there hosting the Cuckoo malware that have still yet to be discovered.

Mac users should proceed with caution when downloading any apps from unknown, third-party developers.

How to watch Apple's May event, where iPads probably roam

Mashable - 4 hours 17 min ago

There be lustrous new iPads on the horizon. Possibly. Maybe. Probably.

Look, it's a likely reveal at Apple's May event, with a haul of gleaming new iProducts set to be announced during the company's online launch. It's a livestream Mashable's editorial team will be glued to, pinging each other in Slack with various exclamatory remarks (Pro! Air!), party parrots, and "I told you sos". We can't help it.

SEE ALSO: Apple event May 7: Every iPad and product we expect to be revealed

As has become tradition for big tech launches, Apple's event is streaming live, so you can join the tech-fiend chorus with a monocled stare at the company's fresh offerings. (What? I'm allowed a little drama. The theme of the event is "Let Loose" which makes me implode in secondhand cringe but also take direction.)

Enough of me, here's how to tune in.

When is the Apple May event and how can I watch it?

Apple's next product announcement event is happening at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET on May 7.

You can watch the launch on at apple.com or through the Apple TV app. The company even has a handy link for adding it to your calendar.

Meanwhile, be sure to follow Mashable's socials — X, TikTok, Insta, FB, you know the drill — as our team will be posting sweet, sweet updates on the day.

What will Apple announce at its May event?

Mashable tech editor Kimberly Gedeon has a strong idea of what Apple will reveal at the May 7 event, and that's iPads. We're talking new iPad Pro and iPad Air, both of which Gideon's been keeping a sharp eye on — through every plot twist — and the possibilities of a new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil (take a look at that event graphic again).

But that's not everything and I've merely skimmed the surface of these likely Apple announcements. Dig into Mashable's guide to everything you can expect at Apple's May 7 event.

Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. Tesla just laid off more employees after gutting the entire charging team

Mashable - Mon, 05/06/2024 - 23:45

Tesla isn't done with laying off workers.

According to reports from Business Insider and Electrek, Elon Musk's EV car company laid off more employees over the weekend. With these latest cuts, Tesla has now entered its fourth week of layoffs.

It's unclear just how many workers lost their jobs at Tesla in this latest round of layoffs. At least seven employees have confirmed being laid off from their jobs in Tesla's software, services, and engineering departments.

"After watching my team gradually slimmed down week after week since mid-April, I received the dreaded 'Hello Employee' email this Sunday afternoon," according to a LinkedIn post from a now-former Tesla employee (via Business Insider).

Tesla's bad year

Tesla's first quarterly report of the year saw the company's earnings tumble by nine percent, falling well short of what experts and analysts predicted. Tesla sales and profits have dropped by around 50 percent year-over-year.

Then, just last month, Tesla issued a recall for its new Cybertruck after consumers reported a very serious issue where the acceleration pedal could get stuck on the vehicle. Unlike most other Tesla recalls where the company can just issue a software update, this Cybertruck recall requires physical service for all 3,878 Cybertrucks that have already been delivered to customers.

In addition, the issue caused Tesla to temporarily halt Cybertruck production and deliveries.

Tesla's 2024 layoffs…so far

Tesla's layoffs began in mid-April as the company set out to cut around 10 of its 140,000 member workforce to deal with the company's issues. Around 14,000 people were laid off in that round of cuts.

However, shortly after those layoffs, it was reported that Musk was looking to cut closer to 20 percent of Tesla's workers. Musk said he wanted Tesla to get "absolutely hardcore about headcount and cost reduction."

Just last week, Tesla laid off yet another round of workers. This time, however, Tesla gutted an entire team. Around 500 employees in Tesla's "Supercharger" charging network division were laid off from the company.

While it seems this latest round of layoffs is much smaller than the previous ones so far, it also suggests that Tesla is not quite done with getting "absolutely hardcore" when it comes to cuts.

'Apple Pencil Pro' tipped for Apple May 7 event: 3 new features it could have

Mashable - Mon, 05/06/2024 - 23:19

Could an Apple Pencil Pro be on the way? Apple has teased that a new Apple Pencil is on the way, as we can see in the promo image on the Apple Events page.

However, what we weren't expecting is a "pro" variant of the iPad stylus. As spotted by X user @ribu_ap712, code on Apple's Japan-based website hints that a brand-spankin' new Apple Pencil Pro could be revealed at the May 7 Apple livestream event.

Tweet may have been deleted Apple Pencil Pro: 3 possible new features

Confirmed by Mashable, the Japan-based website does, indeed, mention Apple Pencil Pro in a code that yields an interactive animation on the front end.

Here is, in part, a translation of the text:

Folds of green, yellow, orange, and blue paper are bent to form the Apple logo. Inside the logo, you can see the hand of a creator holding an Apple Pencil Pro, attempting to draw. From the tip of the Apple Pencil Pro pressed against the bottom of the logo, lively splashes of orange and pink burst forth, creating vivid waves upwards.

Although the rumor mill, until now, hasn't said anything about a "Pro" variant being released on May 7, we still have some scuttlebutt about the new features that the new iPad stylus will offer.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, an Apple prognosticator with a decent track record, the latest Apple Pencil will have haptic feedback "for the first time."

As 9to5Mac pointed out, there were multiple instances in the iPadOS 17.5 beta code that reference something called a "squeeze gesture," hinting that users may be able to trigger certain functions by pinching the stylus.

And according to another leak from bean spiller Majin Bu on X, the next Apple Pencil may have interchangeable magnetic tips.

It's unclear, though, whether these features are for the rumored Apple Pencil Pro or another Apple Pencil tier.

Hank Green says TikTok won't tell him how much it's paying him

Mashable - Mon, 05/06/2024 - 21:26

TikTok has other priorities at the moment, but Hank Green would love it if the platform could tell him how much it's paid him since January.

In an appearance on The New York Times' Hard Fork podcast, Green told hosts Kevin Roose and Casey Newton that his TikTok dashboard hadn't been updated for several months and that it displays his payouts in British pounds (Green is a longtime resident of Montana).

Green shared the tidbit as part of a larger conversation about how creators will weather the impending sale (or ban) of the platform. When asked if the money he's made on TikTok has changed since he posted a 2022 YouTube video about TikTok's Creator Fund, Green said, "It'd be nice if I knew how much money I made. I have no idea, it hasn't updated since January. It's broken. It thinks I'm British. It's paying me in pounds."

SEE ALSO: Here's how the TikTok ban will likely play out in the courts

He also added, "The thing to remember about TikTok is that like it's not super together," by which he meant that internally, TikTok cannot keep up with its rapid growth.

Newton then noted how that kind of chaos may have led to the ban in the first place: If your creators aren't happy, they're not likely to organize in favor of keeping you around. And if Hank Green, one of the most prominent creators on the platform, is having trouble understanding how much the platform pays him, then it's likely that many smaller creators are struggling with similar issues in silence.
