'Speak No Evil' trailer: James McAvoy is an awful host in chilling horror remake

Mashable - Thu, 04/11/2024 - 06:40

The official trailer for the American Speak No Evil remake is here, and it looks every bit as disturbing as the original Danish film. Good luck to anyone who's keen to sit through that ending again. I will be way over here, thinking happy thoughts.

Based on the 2022 horror of the same name, Speak No Evil follows two families who meet on vacation: American couple Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis) with their daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler), and British couple Paddy (James McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi) with their son Ant (Dan Hough). Quickly befriending each other, the latter invite the former to visit their country home for a weekend getaway.

Unfortunately, the guests soon discover that their hosts aren't as innocuous as they seemed, and that there may be a more sinister explanation to Ant's inability to speak than was previously divulged.

Speak No Evil arrives in theatres Sept. 13.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for April 11's Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Tweet may have been deleted

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Tweet may have been deleted

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Want a hit about the categories without being told the categories? Then give these a try:

How to unpair an Apple Watch

Mashable - Wed, 04/10/2024 - 22:18

There are lots of reasons you'd want to unpair your Apple Watch. Perhaps you got a new one and you're looking to sell or trade your old smartwatch in. Or maybe you're gifting your older model to someone.

Whatever your reason, it's not too difficult to unpair your Apple Watch. Apple itself has a page dedicated to unpairing your Apple Watch in just a few steps. But — and this is important — as the tech giant notes on its page, unpairing your Apple Watch will erase it. This will effectively be a factory reset, so just take note of that.

Here are the steps.

Total Time
  • 5 minutes
What You Need
  • Apple Watch
  • iPhone

Step 1: Make sure your Apple Watch and iPhone are close together

Self explanatory, but make sure there isn't much distance between your phone and watch.

Step 2: Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone

Again, this step is simple to understand.

Credit: Screenshot: iPhone

Step 3: Click the My Watch tap, then select All Watches.

This will reveal all the watches you have paired with your phone.

Step 4: Select the "i" information button next to the watch you're looking to unpair.

This will pull up the next page you need to unpair.

Credit: Apple

Step 5: Hit the red "Unpair Apple Watch" button

Again, be sure this is what you want to do, considering it will factory reset your watch.

Credit: Apple

Step 6: Confirm the Apple Watch you wish to unpair, then decide on a cellular decision

Apple will make sure you want to unpair a specific watch. You'll select unpair. Then you'll be prompted if you want to keep your cellular plan on the watch. If you're keeping the watch and plan to use it again, you can keep the plan. If you're planning on trading it in or selling it, you can uncouple the cell plan.

Step 7: Enter you Apple ID password to complete the unpairing.

If you've forgotten your Apple ID password, it's easy to reset.

That's the simplest way to unpair your Apple Watch, and it shouldn't take more than five minutes to complete the entire process. If you can't locate the iPhone to which the watch is paired, you can factory reset the watch to get the job done. Apple has the exact steps, but effectively, you'll navigate to settings on your watch and then reset.

However, it's probably best to reset using your phone. When you unpair a watch on your iPhone, it will create a backup to save your content and settings. You can then use that backup to restore a new Apple Watch. And just like that you'll be back to normal.

Your internet service provider now has to provide you with a 'nutrition label'

Mashable - Wed, 04/10/2024 - 20:23

It's been 34 years since the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 made it mandatory for companies to display a nutrition label on food products in the U.S. These labels helped inform consumers of exactly what and how much they're eating.

Now, the FCC is hoping its own "nutrition label" requirements for internet service providers will provide that same transparency when it comes to how much pay for a broadband plan.

As of Wednesday, major ISPs will be required to clearly label any and all fees that consumers have to pay for their broadband plans. The FCC has provided a template, much like a "nutrition label," that forces companies to be upfront about their broadband plans' total price.

Everything you'll find on the FCC 'nutrition label'

The FCC's "nutritional label" for internet providers will include much more than just the additional monthly fees or additional charges (e.g., taxes).

An example of the FCC-mandated "nutrition label" for one of Google's GFiber plans. Credit: Google

Besides the total monthly fee price, nutrition labels will include details regarding any activation fees, early termination fees, and the length of the contract. The nutrition labels will also disclose whether the price shown is a discounted rate for new customers and what the consumer will be expected to pay per month once the introductory pricing has expired.

ISPs will need to display any rental fees for equipment such as modems or WiFi routers on the nutrition labels as well.

And the FCC's nutrition labels require more than just price transparency. Companies must also show the full details of a plan to consumers. This includes upload and download speeds, data caps, and how much a consumer will be charged for overages.

Each broadband plan provided by an internet service provider will be required to have its own nutrition label.

ISPs finally comply

As The Verge points out, ISPs fought tooth and nail for nearly a decade to block this FCC requirement. For example, there are some elements of an internet plan that aren't required to be included on a nutrition label, such as data throttling or packet loss.

However, one of the positive changes is that the ISPs now have to provide that previously mentioned individual nutrition plan for each plan. Previously, ISPs were going to provide just one long confusing page with all the information for everything they offer.

The FCC under the Biden administration has been more proactive in tackling hidden fees and other "junk" charges. This nutrition label will serve as one important way to help consumers.

Major ISPs had until April 10 to comply with the nutrition labels. So far, most appear to now be providing them. Mashable found "nutrition labels" or "broadband labels" on plans provided by Verizon, T-Mobile, Comcast, and Google.

Smaller internet providers with less than 100,000 customers have until October to comply with the FCC's new rules on nutrition labels.

Apple Watch Series 10: It’s tipped to get better battery life, thanks to this new feature

Mashable - Wed, 04/10/2024 - 18:35

In a significant development for Apple Watch lovers, rumors suggest the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10 might boost battery life, courtesy of a more power-efficient OLED display.

SEE ALSO: Apple tried to make Apple Watch work with Android Apple Watch Series 10 may have better battery life

Citing a report from South Korean publication The Elec, MacRumors noted that this advancement stems from the implementation of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. This addition offers improved pixel illumination control, which reduces power consumption without altering the visual experience compared to the Apple Series Watch 9.

The introduction of LTPO technology, although potentially challenging to manufacture, promises extended battery life, potentially without increasing the device's price. According to The Elec, production of the Apple Watch Series 10's screen might see collaboration between tech giants LG and Samsung — the latter is expected to join the manufacturing efforts possibly by the time the Apple Watch Series 11 rolls out in 2025.

This isn't the first instance of LTPO OLED technology being utilized in Apple products; the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max already feature this technology. Both models support an always-on display and variable refresh rates without significantly draining the battery. However, such displays are speculated to remain exclusive to iPhone Pro models in the immediate future, with broader applications possibly becoming more feasible by 2025 as production costs and challenges diminish.

With an anticipated release alongside the iPhone 16 in September, the Apple Watch Series 10 is an eagerly awaited companion piece. Currently, the Apple Watch Series 9 delivers around 20 hours of battery life, setting a high benchmark for its successor to exceed.

We haven't had a chance to test them, but our friends at PCMag (which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis) reviewed them and noted that they "offer solid audio quality and moderately effective noise cancellation for a reasonable price." Ultimately, they dubbed them a "budget-friendly Bose competitor." The Space Q45s feature adaptive noise-cancellation that's customizable with five different levels and a battery that will last for up to 50 hours with ANC turned on. They typically cost $149.99, but as of April 10, you can grab them for only $99.99 at Amazon. That matches their Black Friday 2023 price.

If AirTags are simply out of your price range, the eufy Security SmartTrack Card serves as a solid budget-friendly alternative with its current discount. It's about the size of a credit card, so it works best inside of a wallet — although you can just as easily place it inside your luggage or backpack. It works with Apple's Find My app and network to make it easy to locate, so it functions basically the same as an AirTag. It's not compatible with Android devices, unfortunately. Though we haven't reviewed it, our friends over at PCMag (which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis) have, and they dubbed it "a good AirTag alternative if you own an iPhone and want a credit card-size Bluetooth tracker for your wallet or other belongings." It's usually $29.99, but you can save 43% as of April 10 and grab it for only $16.98.

SAVE $84.59: The Shark FlexStyle normally retails for $299.99, but as of April 10, Sephora Beauty Insider members can snag it on sale for just $215.10 using the promo code YAYSAVE — a 28% markdown. Sign up for free.

This month's Sephora Savings Event has ushered in a deeper-than-usual discount on our favorite Dyson Airwrap dupe.

Now through April 15, Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System is on sale for just $215.10 for shoppers who enter the promo code YAYSAVE at checkout while logged into a Sephora Beauty Insider account. (It's completely free to sign up.) The FlexStyle typically retails for $299.99, so this works out to a savings of 28%, or almost $85.

This isn't the FlexStyle's lowest price ever — it briefly fell to $199.99 on the Best Buy app last November — but it's way better than the $239.99 sale price it regularly sees on the Shark website, Amazon, and at Best Buy. (Note that build-your-own bundles were $219.99 at the former retailer at the time of writing.)

SEE ALSO: Dyson Airwrap vs. Shark FlexStyle: Here's which hot air tool is worth your money

The FlexStyle isn't just the best alternative to the Airwrap — it's arguably better than Dyson's viral multistyler, which costs twice as much outside of sales and lacks a swiveling base that twists it into a hair dryer. It's powered by the exact same Coanda technology, which dries and volumizes hair by wrapping it around barrels, and it self-regulates its temperature to prevent extreme heat damage. Just like the Airwrap, the FlexStyle also comes with a variety of interchangeable attachments.

"Between the FlexStyle and the Airwrap, it's hard for me to imagine a reason why you'd opt for the latter unless you're into big purchases for the sake of big purchases, or if you're especially loyal to Dyson," said Bethany Allard, a lead shopping reporter at Mashable who's heavily tested both devices. And the FlexStyle's current sale price makes it an even more compelling purchase than usual.

I have a Shark robot vacuum, so this is a brand I recommend and trust — it was one of the best purchases I've ever made. The Shark Matrix robot vacuum is a basic robot vacuum, but it does everything you need it to (and for a steal, at this price). It features Matrix Clean, which uses advanced navigation technology to ensure no spot goes uncleaned. It also has powerful suction, can pick up dirt, pet hair, and other small particles, and is self-emptying, meaning it can hold up to 30 days of dirt and debris before you need to empty it.

With a self-cleaning brush roll and improved map accuracy, this little vacuum is ideal for pet owners or anyone who wants a hassle-free way to keep their floors clean. Set a schedule via the Shark app or ask Alexa to start a cleaning session, and let the Shark Matrix do all the work for you. Plus, it has a 90-minute runtime on a single charge.

Apple Vision Pro: The internet is amazed by this viral X-ray scan

Mashable - Wed, 04/10/2024 - 18:01

Ever wondered what the inside of an Apple Vision Pro looks like?

Truthfully, I hadn't, but that doesn't matter because now you can take a peek, if you want.

The industrial CT and X-Ray equipment company Lumafield posted a blog post on Tuesday (with an accompanying YouTube video) showcasing what the internals of an Apple Vision Pro (as well as a Meta Quest 3 and Quest Pro) look like. The results, as you might expect regarding anything Apple-related, made some waves online.

SEE ALSO: iPad Pro 2024: 5 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet

The blog post delves into technical intricacies for those seeking a nuanced understanding of device functionality. In sum it up, Apple's headset commands a higher price due to its utilization of costly components and its focus on a distinct audience compared to Meta's headsets. Meta's devices aren't quite as complex from a design perspective, but they also cost substantially less than $3,500.

Anyway, you may not learn that much from checking out the blog post and video, but at the very least, it's a fun way to kill a few minutes.

If you don't need a 12.4-inch screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 might be a more budget-friendly pick. With an 11-inch screen, The Tab S8 offers the same functionality and speed as the S8+ but at a lower price point.

The S8+ has a slightly larger battery capacity (and is a little heavier) than the S8, but if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of battery life, the S8 is a great option that still delivers.
