2024 iPad Air: 4 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet

Mashable - 13 hours 22 min ago

The iPad Air 2024 is arguably the most highly anticipated tablets of the year. It also may be one of the most delayed consumer products of 2024.

The new iPads — both the Air and Pro models — were poised to be released in March (perhaps alongside the new M3 MacBook Air), according to DigiTimes, which cited Apple's suppliers. However, it has been frequently pushed back throughout March and April.

So the question is, when will the iPad Air finally drop? We have the scoop on its potential release date — as well as four new features you can expect from the new tablet.

SEE ALSO: iPad Pro 2024: 5 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet iPad Air 2024 release date

The iPad Air is poised to drop May 7. On Tuesday, April 23, Apple announced that it will launch "Let Loose" livestream.

During this event, you'll probably see the new iPad Air as well as the iPad Pro.

The iPad Air, alongside the iPad Pro, has been reportedly delayed throughout March and April, according to DigiTimes. However, it seems like Apple finally has the iPad Air release date written in stone.

iPad Air 2024 price

Like Macworld, we're expecting the iPad Air 2024 to launch its 10.9-inch variant at $599, similar to its current-gen model.

However, it's trickier to predict the price of the rumored new 12.9-inch version. MacRumors says it will be $200 more, putting the 12.9-inch model at $799.

Macworld has a more optimistic forecast, speculating that the 12.9-inch variant will have a starting price of $699.

iPad Air 2024: 4 new features

The next model will be the 6th-generation iPad Air, and according to rumors and leaks, it will have the following new features:

  • Two display sizes: an anticipated 10.9-inch model and a new 12.9-inch variant, according to Bloomberg

  • New miniLED display

  • Front camera moved from the top bezel to the side, according ShrimpApplePro, an X leaker with a decent track record

  • New M2 chip, according to Bloomberg

To summarize, instead of the usual one iPad Air model we get from Apple, we're expecting two models, making it similar to the iPad Pro's two-model offerings. To reiterate, rumor has it that the iPad Air 6 will have a 10.9-inch model and a 12.9-inch model that matches the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro on the market.

As we reported in mid-April, the iPad Air will reportedly feature a new miniLED variant (a step up from the current-gen LCD display design). This will likely come to the new 12.9-inch model. However, keep in mind that Ross Young, a display analyst who appears to have connections with sources familiar with Apple's iPad production, refutes this report. He says that the iPad Air will not come with a new miniLED display.

Thirdly, as it stands now, the iPad Air features a camera placed on the top (while it's being held in portrait mode). However, Apple is reportedly moving that camera to the side, allowing for a better camera experience during landscape orientation.

That camera will move from the top to the side, according to rumors Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable

Bloomberg states that the iPad Air will get an M2 chip. For reference, the last iPad Air, updated in 2022, featured the M1 chip.

As MacRumors pointed out, if Apple is feeling particularly generous, it may opt to pack iPad Air 2024 with the more advanced M3 chip.

Save for the relocated camera and a larger iPad Air, we haven't seen any rumors about significant design changes. The iPad Air, compared to the iPad Pro, has always been slightly thicker with wider bezels — and that design language is expected to continue with the iPad Air 2024.

Rumor has it that Apple is planning to drop a new Magic Keyboard and an Apple Pencil, too. Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable

It's worth nothing that the Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly releasing a refreshed Apple Pencil with a new squeeze gesture as well as a new Magic Keyboard.

As aforementioned, the new iPad Air 2024 is expected to drop on May 7. Stay tuned for Mashable's in-depth coverage on the new tablet.

The best cheap VPNs in May 2024

Mashable - 13 hours 42 min ago

The best VPNs aren't necessarily the most expensive. Some leading VPNs are actually really affordable, which is great news for anyone looking to secure cheap online security, data protection, and increased streaming options.

You have come to the right place if you're looking for a premium VPN with advanced features, without the big price tag. We've lined up some great value options for absolutely everyone, and there is no need to compromise on security, connection speed, customer support, or anything else.

But first, there are a few things we need to cover.

What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide valuable protection for your data and identity when you're navigating the online world. How do they do this? VPNs offer online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network that hides your real IP address and makes all of your information unreadable.

All of your activity is untraceable and secure, because your online traffic passes through an encrypted tunnel. Everything inside the tunnel is protected against online threats like viruses, hackers, and malware. VPNs are primarily designed to provide online security, but there is another reason that millions of people use these services.

SEE ALSO: The best VPNs for your iPhone

VPNs can also be used to stream movies and shows from around the world, and the process is actually really simple. We've already mentioned how VPNs provide anonymity by hiding your real IP address. Well, this technique can also be used to manipulate the streaming market. By hiding your real IP address and connecting you to a server in another location, you can trick your favourite streaming sites into thinking that you are based in a different country. This provides access to all the extra content that would normally be restricted in your location.

Should you use free VPNs?

The question that everyone wants an answer to is whether you actually need to pay for a VPN. There are plenty of free VPNs out there, but do these offer the features you need to browse, shop, and stream securely? Unfortunately, there is often a catch with free versions (usually in the form of a limitation on your data usage or connection speed).

Occasional users will probably be satisfied with a free VPN, but if you're going to be streaming or downloading on a regular basis, you should look elsewhere. The only exception to this rule is a free trial. These come without limitations, but obviously don't tend to last for a long time.

The conclusion is that the best option for securing your data and streaming more content from around the world is with a paid subscription. The sad fact is that you'll have to pay to gain access to advanced security features without limitations on your usage. It's not all bad news though, because there are plenty of cheap plans out there, especially if you're willing to commit to a lengthy contract.

What should you consider before subscribing to a VPN?

The process of actually selecting a VPN can be seriously tricky, especially if you don't know what to consider. Most of the best VPNs offer many of the same features with similar packages, so it's important to know what matters.

To make your life a little bit easier, we have shortlisted a few things to consider before making any sort of decision:

  • Customer support — VPNs can be difficult to understand if you're not an experienced user, and even if you are, problems can occur. Whether you're a total beginner or not, customer support is key for dealing with any potential issues that might arise. You should also consider whether customer support is offered by phone, email, or web chat.

  • Jurisdiction — It's a good idea to look for VPNs based in the British Virgin Islands, Panama, Switzerland, and other privacy-friendly countries. VPNs based in countries that fall under the jurisdiction of the intelligence-sharing alliances should be avoided: the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Spain. VPNs in these countries can be forced by authorities to collect and hand over user data.

  • Network size and location — The best VPNs offer a large network of geographically diverse servers. The more servers (and server locations) offered by a VPN, the more likely you are to find a reliable and fast connection. This is also particularly important for streaming, as you should always be able to connect to a server in the country with the content you want to watch.

  • Trustworthiness — We recommend finding an experienced provider with a strong track record and a clear privacy policy. It's important that your VPN of choice guarantees your data won't be logged or collected. If it isn't obvious what happens to your data, you should steer clear.

Make sure you carefully consider these features before deciding on the VPN that suits you and your lifestyle. Once you have narrowed down your options, you can begin the process of finding the best deals.

What is the best VPN?

We're sorry to burst your bubble, but there isn't one VPN that stands above all the rest. The best VPN for you really comes down to your own set of personal preferences. Once you find a few options that tick your boxes, you need to consider the best deals.

We have reached out to partners in order to provide you with market-leading prices on VPN subscriptions, with performance and security in mind. All of these VPN services have been handpicked not only because of the prices and deals on offer, but because they all offer the most important features to protect your online data and identity.

There are also plenty of services to consider on this list if your priority is unlocking streaming sites like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. Online security should always be the priority, but we know that many subscribers use these services to unlock more content from around the world. We get it, and we're here to help.

These are the best deals on cheap VPNs in 2024.

iPad Pro 2024: 6 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet

Mashable - 13 hours 53 min ago

The iPad Pro 2024 has been reportedly pushed back several times, according to DigiTimes, alongside the next-generation iPad Air.

Citing Apple's suppliers as its source, the Taiwan-based publication claims that the iPad Pro 2024 was supposed to be released in March (perhaps with the new M3 MacBook Air). However, its release has been reportedly postponed several times.

Fortunately, according to Mark Gurman, Bloomberg's popular Apple prognosticator, Apple reportedly finally has set release date. Curious about which new features will come with the new iPad Pro? Based on leaks and rumors, we've got the scoop.

SEE ALSO: 2024 iPad Air: 3 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet iPad Pro 2024 release date

The iPad Pro will likely drop on May 7. On Tuesday, April 23, Apple announced that it will launch a May 7 livestream. It's during this event that you'll probably see the new iPad Pro as well as other lower-tier tablets.

This aligns with Gurman's reporting, who said that the iPad Pro will be announced during the week of May 6.

Per DigiTimes, the iPad Pro 2024 has been delayed repeatedly from March through April. However, it seems like Apple has finally set is sights on an early May release date.

iPad Pro 2024 price

The iPad Pro 2024 will reportedly sport OLED displays, which will likely make the price tag significantly pricier.

According to yeux1122, an X leaker that Macworld claims has a "spotty record," the iPad Pro will have a starting price tag of about $1,499. For reference, here are the starting prices of the current-gen iPad Pro models:

  • 11-inch - $799

  • 12.9-inch - $1,099

If that X leaker is to be believed, that means that Apple has nearly doubled the starting price of the iPad Pro 2024. If you were to ask me, I do believe that the next iPad Pro will have a price hike — I'm just not convinced it'll be that expensive.

Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable

Adding salt to the wound, yeux1122 also predicted a jump from $1,099 to somewhere between $1,799 and $1,999 for the 12.9-inch model. Again, I'm doubtful.

DigiTimes' prediction (shared by MacRumors) is a lot more believable, claiming that the iPad Pro 2024 models will have a $160 price increase. Based on this rumor, the new prices should be the following, give or take:

  • 11-inch - $999

  • 13-inch - $1,199

Still pricey, but far more credible than yeux1122's outlandish forecast.

iPad Pro 2024: 6 new features

The new iPad Pro 2024's brand spankin' new display is the talk of the town. In addition to a new screen, here are six new features coming to the next-generation iPad Pro 2024:

  • New OLED panel for a sharper, brighter display

  • 12.9-inch variant upgrades to 13 inches

  • Relocated webcam

  • M4 chip

  • Thinner chassis

  • Slimmer bezels

To dive deeper, the iPad Pro 2024 is ditching its current-generation mini-LED display for a new OLED panel, which should bring deeper blacks and better contrast to the screen.

Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable

OLED displays are also known to have better power efficiency than mini-LED screens, so there's a good chance that the iPad Pro 2024 will have better battery life than its predecessor.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple's own software confirms its rumored move to OLED displays. Code spotted in iPadOS 17.5 beta, dropped in early April alongside iOS 17.5 beta for developers, suggests that the next-generation iPad Pro will, indeed, feature an OLED panel.

SEE ALSO: iOS 17.5 beta 1 is here: 3 new features coming to your iPhone

The iPad Pro will also be slightly larger, per Gurman. The 12.9-inch variant will get a slight bump to 13 inches.

According to "Instant Digital", a leaker from Weibo (a China-based social media platform), the new iPad Pro 2024 will have its camera relocated from the top bezel (when it's in portrait mode) to the side for a "landscape webcam." (We're also seeing a similar rumor for the iPad Air 2024.)

Next, the iPad Pro 2024 may get an AI upgrade, thanks to the new M4 chip. Previously, we thought the iPad Pro 2024 was going to be equipped with the M3 chip that was unveiled late last year. However, according to a new prediction form Gurman, the iPad Pro is set to be packed with the M4 chip instead.

What does this mean? According to Gurman, the M4 chip is an AI-focused processor. As such, we're expected a new suite of AI-focused features to hit the high-end tablet.

According to 9to5Mac, the iPad Pro 2024 will have thinner dimensions, too. For context, the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro is 6.4mm thick, but the new one will reportedly be 5mm thick. The 11-inch variant currently has a thickness of 5.9mm, but its successor will allegedly be thinner at 5.1mm.

Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable

And again, from Instant Digital, the iPad Pro 2024 will reportedly have slimmer bezels, allowing for users to enjoy more screen real estate. (The iPhone 16 is tipped to have thinner borders, too.)

According to the rumor mill, Apple is also reportedly dropping an Apple Pencil with a new squeeze gesture as well as a new Magic Keyboard.

As I said at the outset, the new iPad Pro 2024 is expected to drop on May 7. Stay tuned for Mashable's coverage on the new tablets.

Apple May 7 event: Last-minute predictions on what to expect

Mashable - 14 hours 5 min ago

On May 7, Apple will hold the "Let Loose" livestream, its first official Apple Event of the year. Which new products will be revealed?

We're expecting brand new iPad models and iPad accessories like an all-new Apple Pencil, based on the roundup of leaks and rumors we've collected about the event.

Apple is calling "Let Loose" a "different kind of Apple event," but it's unclear what that means.

Apple events typically occur within specific time frames, such as June for WWDC and September for iPhones. Apple doesn't normally hold an event in May. The last time it held an Apple event that didn't fit its routine schedule was the "Scary Fast" livestream, when the M3 MacBooks were unveiled, on the evening before Halloween.

What to expect from the May 7 Apple event

Although we already have a pretty good idea of what Apple will drop on Tuesday, Gurman has pulled together a last-minute report to solidify his predictions for the upcoming event. Here is his final forecast ahead of the livestream:

SEE ALSO: iPad Pro 2024: 6 new features coming to the rumored new Apple tablet A new iPad Pro

Apple's graphic for the "Let Loose" Apple Event showcases an image of a hand holding a pencil, so it seems pretty obvious that this event will focus on the iPad and its relevant accessories.

However, according to Gurman, Apple will likely focus on two specific new models of iPads. First up, the "star" of the event, the iPad Pro.

Gurman says that the new iPad Pro will be the first iPad with an OLED display, which will improve the iPad's image quality and probably result in a thinner device. Apple will release two versions, an 11-inch model and a 12.9-inch one.

While this has yet to be confirmed, there is a chance that these new Apple iPad Pros will be the very first Apple devices with Apple's brand new M4 chipset. The M4 chip is set to start rolling out across Apple's computer and mobile device lines through this year and next and is believed to play a major role in Apple's coming AI focus.

iPad Air refresh

The "mid-tier" iPad, the iPad Air, will also get a refresh.

While not as much of a leap from its predecessor as the iPad Pro, it does seem like Apple will be offering the usual 10.9-inch model as well as an all-new 12.9-inch version of the device.

The iPad Air is expected to be powered by the M2 chip, which Apple first released in 2022 with the M2 MacBook Air.

Updated Apple Pencil

As previously mentioned, Apple's graphic for the event predominantly features a pencil, so a new Apple Pencil release seems pretty locked in.

According to Bloomberg, the new Apple Pencil is an update of the higher-end model which launched in 2018 — not the lower-end version which was updated just least year.

This new premium Apple Pencil will include haptic feedback, meaning users will feel a "vibration-like effect" while using the device, matching whatever action it is that they are performing on the iPad.

Gurman says another new feature likely to be added will allow users to perform tasks with the Apple Pencil by applying pressure to the device with their hand by squeezing it.

Magic Keyboard for iPad

It also appears that these new iPad models will launch with a brand new Magic Keyboard for iPads as well.

The new version will still come with an iPad case, keyboard, and trackpad but will be "more durable" as it will use aluminum and look "more laptop-like."

A smaller event but Apple has more to come

This does appear to be a much smaller Apple Event than usual, however, it's not out of the ordinary for Apple to hold device-specific events, especially in recent years.

A new iPad Mini, the iPad model that hasn't been updated at all since 2021, isn't expected yet. Neither is a new base iPad model. New MacBooks aren't expected to be part of the event either.

There is a chance Apple will tease new AI features, especially if the iPad Pro model features the M4 chip. However, Apple will save most, if not all, of its AI announcements for the big WWDC event in June.

How to see the Eta Aquarid meteor shower in 2024

Mashable - Sat, 05/04/2024 - 23:55

It's May and it's getting warm (in the Northern Hemisphere). At a time like this, the Eta Aquarid meteor shower is a great excuse to look up at the night sky.

This year's shower peaks close to the new moon — the opposite of a full moon — which is ideal. Dark skies mean better viewing conditions, which will come as a relief to anyone who tried to catch this show last year when a dazzling full moon filled the sky with light, making meteor viewing next to impossible. These conditions also contrast nicely with the Lyrid meteor shower last month, during which a nearly full waxing gibbous moon may have ruined your attempt to make a wish on a shooting star.

When to watch the Eta Aquarids in 2024

The Eta Aquarids produce a long show, with activity from April 15 to May 27 this year. However, if you're only looking up once, plan to do it during the show's period of peak activity on the night of May 4 and into the wee hours of the morning on May 5. In theory, 2 a.m. local time is the absolute best time (due to factors we'll get into below), but meteors don't follow rules, so the hours between 2 a.m. and dawn are sure to be exciting as well.

SEE ALSO: What are comets? The secret lives of space snowballs, explained.

Past experience with this shower indicates that the Eta Aquarids come in bursts. This means if you look up during a lull, you might think you've missed the show. But wait a while, and  there won't be any ambiguity; these are fast meteors, and you'll generally know from the pace of the action that you're seeing the Eta Aquarids. Patience will be rewarded.

How do I see the Eta Aquarids?

Since most Mashable readers are in the Northern Hemisphere, the unfortunate answer to this question is: for best results, switch hemispheres. Southern Hemisphere-based stargazers are blessed with a 50 meteor-per-hour spectacle (assuming conditions are ideal), while northerners can only hope to see 10-30 per hour. Honestly, however, 10-30 is still good.

Find a patch of dark sky located above an area far from cities and towns. A wide open view is best, so if you're reading this from the bottom of a well, catching a meteor shower is going to be challenging. Get comfortable. Stay warm. Preserve your night vision by not looking at your phone.

What are the Eta Aquarids anyway?

The Eta Aquarids get their name from their radiant point which is, in simple terms, the place in the sky where the meteors originate. The Eta Aquarids originate in the constellation Aquarius, so timing your viewing of the meteors involves waiting for Aquarius to rise above the horizon (which is why waiting until 2 a.m. local time is your best bet). But Aquarius is a collection of stars light-years away, and the meteors themselves are as little as 31 miles away when we see them burning up in our atmosphere.

Generally speaking, meteor showers are the result of the Earth passing through a comet's trail of tiny dust and ice particles. The Eta Aquarids' happen to have a celebrity parent: the Michael Jordan of space rocks, Halley's Comet. The most famous comet in the solar system won't visit Earth's vicinity for decades, but this shower is our annual encounter with the lingering evidence of its existence.

Can apps help me find the Eta Aquarids?

Stargazing apps like Sky Safari are highly recommended for stargazing in general, but they aren't very useful during meteor showers. An app can make it a breeze to find Aquarius, but the bright screen will make meteors harder to see, and they streak across the entire sky anyway, rather than clustering around their radiant point.

The best advice is: just look up, and wait.
