Finally, long-overdue feature comes to Google Meet.

On Wednesday, Google announced a new update for its video conferencing and calling platform Google Meet, which lets users switch devices while connected to a call without dropping the stream. Essentially, this allows users to seamlessly swap between their desktop and mobile devices without other users in the Google Meet knowing about it.

With this update, Google Meet brings a feature to its platform that at least one competitor, Zoom, has had for at least a few years now.

How to use the Google Meet device swapping feature

To swap devices, you must be in an active Google Meet call on either desktop or mobile.

Next, open the page for that specific Google Meet on their secondary device. On that page, users will see an option to "Switch here." Selecting that option will transfer the Google Meet call to their second device — and then drop the call on the first device once the transfer completes.

Google Meet users will even have the ability to remain on the call on both devices by going to "Other joining options" and choosing "Join here too."

The feature works on desktop computers as well as Android and iOS devices like smartphones and tablets.

This new Google Meet feature makes so much sense, one has to wonder how it wasn't launched years ago when everyone was working at home while juggling family life with their kids. But, it's here now. So, take advantage of your ability to travel around during a Google Meet call if needed. Nobody will know!

UPDATE: Apr. 25, 2024, 2:17 p.m. EDT Reddit is back up and fully operational. The company wrote that the "incident has been resolved" shortly before 2 p.m. ET.

Reddit was down for lots of users on Thursday, April 25. The site confirmed it was experiencing a back end issue.

The company wrote Thursday afternoon: "An issue with a Reddit backend has impacted many users on our site. We are looking into the cause." So if you're getting something like a 502 bad gateway error message, that's the reason.

When Mashable tried to load the site on desktop a bit after 1 p.m. ET we got a typical, "Oops, something went wrong, please try again later."

User reports of issues began to spike upwards on Down Detector starting at about 20 minutes past noon, eastern time. The issue should, hopefully, not be long lasting. Reddit said it was working to fix the problem at around 1:15 p.m. ET.

"We have identified the issue, and are remediating it; reddit.com should be back shortly," the company wrote.

Despite signing the TikTok "ban" bill, President Joe Biden plans to continue to use the platform to campaign for re-election reports the Financial Times.

Biden signed the bill into law yesterday (April 14) as part of a foreign aid package sending 95 billion dollars to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The bill requires TikTok's China-based parent company ByteDance to divest itself from the app within the next year. If the company fails to do so TikTok will be banned in the U.S. The deadline Jan. 19 falls on the day before the presidential inauguration.

The ban comes amid security concerns. Lawmakers who argued for the ban are concerned that because a Chinese company owns TikTok it could hand American users' data over to the Chinese government, despite TikTok denying that it shares data with the Chinese government. There are 170 million American users of TikTok, more than half the population and Biden's campaign has taken note of the platform's reach.

Biden's campaign still sees the app as a way to reach young voters. A Biden campaign official told the Financial Times, "When the stakes are this high in the election, we are going to use every tool we have to reach young voters where they are." The official also ensured "enhanced security measures" were in place.

Biden first joined the platform on the day of the Super Bowl (Feb. 11). His account has since posted 140 videos accumulating a mere 3.8 million likes. The president only has 308,200 followers on the platform.

As was announced in a blog post earlier this month, 2015's Fallout 4 just got a shiny new coat of paint. Officially set to launch on April 25 (which you may have noticed is today), Fallout 4 officially has PS5 and Xbox Series ports that promise a plethora of improvements to the nine-year-old game. Here's what that entails.

First off, I should mention that the update to Fallout 4 is free if you already own the game on PS5 or Xbox Series consoles. Xbox subscribers, in particular, shouldn't have a problem here, as the game is available on Xbox Game Pass for free.

Once you download the update, you'll find that the game now has toggles for "Performance" or "Quality" modes in the settings menu. Bethesda's blog post didn't give exact technical specifications for these modes, but mentioned that the performance mode targets 60 frames per second and implied that the quality mode would have a higher resolution (while likely targeting 30 frames per second).

Fallout 4 got a batch of fresh stability and bug fixes with this re-release, too. As is the case with almost every game on current-gen consoles, I'd be shocked if the load times weren't vastly improved, too. Another fun bonus is that the Steam version of Fallout 4 is now marked as "Verified" for Steam Deck.

Release times based on your time zone

The good news is that, at least in the U.S., it seems the update is already available, per X/Twitter gaming legend Wario64. That means there's no need to set an alarm for a specific release time.

"Hm, this is a lot wider than I expected," I said when I held the Rabbit R1 for the first time. Laying flat on my hand, the vivid, electric orange chassis exceeded the span of my palm.

No, it's not the most comfortable gadget to hold with its unforgiving flat edges, but it's not unwieldy either. Buttons, including the scrolling wheel and the push-to-talk button, are strategically placed, allowing my fingers to navigate the Rabbit R1 with ease.

When people gushed about the Rabbit R1, calling it a "beautiful gadget," I didn't get it — until I saw it with my own eyes. "That bright orange chassis is an eyesore," I thought. "What's the big deal?" But now I get it. It's the nostalgia.

With the cute black-and-white rabbit icon bouncing up and down the screen surrounded by a "loud" color, the device reminded me of my childhood obsession with '90s pocket toys like the Tamagotchi or Digimon (handheld virtual pets).

Shout-out to Teenage Engineering for designing this AI device; the Rabbit R1 makes me feel like a kid again.

While the Rabbit R1 stirs up memories of the past, I can't help but feel a bit iffy about the gadget. Why? I'll get it into that, but first, my first impressions.

The gestures are addictive

There's something very fidget spinner toy-esque about the Rabbit R1 in that the functions all operate differently, whether it's a scrolling wheel or a clicky side button.

The scrolling wheel, to my surprise, is very smooth. In other words, it doesn't have that "staccato" feel, if that makes sense, in which the wheel has fits and starts (à la Apple's digital crown), allowing you to stop at selections.

Instead, you have to keep rolling the wheel downward until your desired word is highlighted in orange. Truthfully, I don't love the scrolling wheel. It takes too many "rolls" to get to the word I want to select.

On the plus side, you can shake the device to invoke the Settings menu. I'm telling you — it's like a Bop It toy.

It has a 2.88-inch screen, but no, it can't browse the web

The Rabbit R1 has a touchscreen in that you can enable a virtual keyboard to appear, allowing you to make prompts that way.

However, as far as using your fingers to navigate RabbitOS, that's not happening. You'll have to use the scroll wheel and select by using the side button.

You may be wondering, "Can I browse the web with this thing?" The answer is no. If you had dreams of using this as some sort of mini reading device, I've got no choice but to dash them. Plus, you wouldn't want to — the screen is too dim for that.

No, it doesn't text or make calls

The Rabbit R1 can do a lot of things, but sending texts and making calls isn't one of them. This was admittedly a bit disappointing. Before grabbing this device, I had fantasies of dictating texts to friends without lifting a finger.

However, I quickly realized that the Rabbit R1 can't be connected to my phone. Boo!

Faster-than-expected responses

From my asking about the local weather (it's 59 degrees today in my town, by the way) to questions about the Premiere League, the Rabbit R1 took about two seconds to respond.

However, when it comes to using the camera and basing its responses on what it "sees," it took slightly longer. After I asked it a question about a painting, it took 2-3 seconds to say "Taking a look now" before responding in one second with its description.

It can "see" and describe things

The Rabbit R1 has a cool functionality thanks to an auto-rotating camera that you can invoke by double tapping the right action button, which lets you point to any object — which it will then tell you about it. It's very Google Lens. Hell, even my iPhone can perform this functionality, too.

In the video below, you can see it successfully describing the masterpiece in my living room.

However, I tried testing to see if it could, for example, translate a foreign language to English. I thought this see-and-describe feature would be helpful while traveling to countries to diminish language barriers (particularly while ordering at a restaurant with a menu in another language). Sadly, I found that it doesn't have this capability.

So far, the best use case I've found for this is that I can use it to tell me which dishes I can make when I'm stumped.

Based on its responses, I found the speakers to be too quiet — even at max volume.

Keep in mind that it can play music and podcasts from a paid Spotify account, but I haven't tested it yet.

Yes, you can connect Bluetooth headphones

Fortunately, a solution for the quiet speakers is pairing it with my trusty Sony XM4 headphones. I simply shook the Rabbit R1 to get the Settings menu, turned on Bluetooth, and paired my headphones with ease.

It connects via 4G LTE and Wi-Fi

As it turns out, the Rabbit R1 has a SIM card slot, allowing you to be connected at all times (i.e., 4G LTE). If you don't care to grab a SIM card for this AI assistant, you can also rely on Wi-Fi.

Battery life is OK

Strangely, when I unboxed my Rabbit R1, it wasn't charged. As such, I couldn't even use it at the Rabbit R1 launch party, where I obtained it.

When I got home, I charged it up to about 50% (no, the Rabbit R1 does not come with a charging cable). Seventeen hours later, the battery life is about 15%.

Don't worry, though. In my full review, I'll give you a better idea on battery life at full charge.

But something is iffy about the Rabbit R1

As the old saying goes, "If something is too good to be true, it probably is." Jesse Lyu, CEO of Rabbit R1, keeps boasting that the Rabbit R1 is only $199 and is subscription free. However, there's no way in hell it can be subscription free for long.

Once the hype dies down and nerds like me wipe the shelves clean, what's next? To put it succinctly, how does Rabbit R1 intend to make money?

There's got to be something down the pipeline through which Rabbit intends to squeeze money out of its user base, no?

Also, I'm still not totally clear about whether the Rabbit R1 squelches all privacy concerns consumers may have.

Final thoughts

Someone on Twitter saw a video of me asking the Rabbit R1 to describe what it was seeing. Paraphrasing his reply, he said something to the effect of, "Google Lens can do that. Why would be the point of getting this?"

Rabbit's mission here is to create this all-in-one AI device. Yes, it can do what Google Lens can do, but it can also do what Spotify, ChatGPT, DoorDash, and Uber can do in one device — and with nothing but your voice.

There's still so much to test, including ordering DoorDash to my door, but I'll be sure to come back with a thorough review.

UPDATE: Apr. 25, 2024, 6:06 p.m. EDT This hands-on review was updated to reflect that the Rabbit R1 is, indeed, a touchscreen, but only when enabling the virtual keyboard. Otherwise, you can't use your fingers to make any other selections. We also removed a section that claimed that the R1 Rabbit offered an inaccurate answer. We asked, "Which Premiere League team won the most titles?", and the Rabbit R1 answered "13." Although I was seeking total number of titles (i.e., 20), the question didn't make that clear, making "13" a perfectly valid answer.

Tackling a spring cleaning to-do list? Go ahead and leave some of those cobwebs intact: According to The Home Depot, it's already time to start thinking about Halloween decor.

The home improvement retailer is celebrating the almost-halfway point to spooky season with a limited initial release of its 2024 Halloween collection, including an upgraded version of its iconic 12-foot skeleton and its new skeleton dog sidekick. Products will be available online starting Thursday, April 25 while supplies last.

A representative for the company couldn't confirm a sale start time but recommended that interested shoppers pay close attention to The Home Depot's website and social media accounts for availability intel. If past restocks are any indication, product listings will likely go live around 6 to 7 a.m. ET.

The sale marks the second year in a row that The Home Depot has hosted a "Halfway to Halloween" event in April, and shoppers can expect to see an even bigger selection of products compared to its spring 2023 surprise drop.

The star of the show is, once again, the 12-Foot Giant-Sized Skeleton with LifeEyes LCD Eyes, a viral hit that's sold out every year since 2020. "Skelly," as it's affectionately known to fans and admirers, will make its fourth coming with newly enhanced light-up eyes that have eight swappable settings but stay at its usual price of $299.

Skelly is joined by two new colossal companions this year — one being the aforementioned five-by-seven-foot Skeleton Dog ($199), a cadaverous canine with a posable mouth and the same changeable LCD eyes. Its name is "Dawg" and it's Skelly's "best friend," per the description on its product page.

The other XL newcomer is a 12.5-Foot Giant-Sized Inferno Deadwood Skeleton, an arboreal horror with built-in color-changing lights that looks like Groot's evil cousin. It will sell for $379.

Rounding out The Home Depot's Halfway to Halloween lineup is a seven-foot Animated LED Frankenstein’s Monster ($279), which says lines from Universal's 1931 Frankenstein film, and a three-pack of five-foot Pose-n-Stay Skeletons ($119) with moveable arms and light-up eyes.

Shoppers can expect to encounter even more new Halloween props at The Home Depot later in the coming months, including a 7.5-foot animated plague doctor, a 10-foot haunted maple tree, a nine-foot headless horseman, a six-foot animatronic pirate named "Captain Cuts," and a six-foot card-playing skeleton called "Jack of Spades." The fate of the 12-foot, gourd-headed Inferno Pumpkin Skeleton that's been sold alongside Skelly since 2021 is still in limbo, but Home Depot's rep said more announcements are imminent.

Another online launch of The Home Depot's Halloween collection will likely happen sometime in July, as we've seen in past years, so save up accordingly.

Now, unless you're starting a clean slate in a new town, you probably want to bring over all your data so you can hit the ground running with your new phone. But how do you transfer iPhone to iPhone? It's pretty simple, but before you do anything, back up your iPhone and have your Apple ID and password ready to go (even if you have to reset your password — everyone forgets!).

How to transfer iPhone to iPhone Total Time

Step 1: Transfer your SIM card from your old iPhone to your new iPhone.

Apple has a handy video explainer on how to do this if you need it.

Step 2: Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and your Bluetooth is switched on.

Step 3: Follow the onscreen instructions from iOS' Quick Start to set up your phone.

Step 4: At the "Apps & Data" screen, pick which way you want to transfer your data.

Apple will offer you options. Choosing to download from iCloud means your data (including apps) will start downloading and you can begin using your new iPhone while it chugs away in the background. Choosing to transfer directly means an extra step (see below) and you won't be able to use your new iPhone until the download is done.

Step 5: If you're transferring data directly (not through iCloud), make sure your two iPhones are near each other and plugged into chargers.

Step 6: And you're done!

How to transfer an iPhone backup to your new iPhone

You can also transfer your iPhone data using a backup you've previously made. If you've already set-up your new iPhone and want to restore a backup, you need to erase the device first before carrying out the steps below.

In your iPhone, navigate to Settings, then tap General, then scroll to "Transfer or Reset [Device] " before tapping "Erase All Content and Settings". Then you'll be able to set up your iPhone from scratch.

Despite constant mockery from X owner Elon Musk, Threads is growing.

According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who shared the news during Meta's most recent earnings call, Threads now has more than 150 million monthly active users.

That's a pretty big increase from February, when Threads (also according to Zuckerberg) had 130 million monthly users. The app first passed 100 million users in July last year.

For comparison, Twitter has about 550 million monthly active users globally (if you trust Musk and X's official figures, which are disputed by some research firms).

The company isn't sitting on its laurels, either. On Wednesday, Head of Instagram and Threads Adam Mosseri said that Threads is testing the option to archive posts "with a small number of people."

According to Mosseri, Threads users said in a poll they didn't want this to be a feature that's on by default, so it's added as an option.

UPDATE: Apr. 25, 2024, 11:47 a.m. GMT TikTok will voluntarily suspend TikTok Lite's reward program amid the EU's concerns. "TikTok always seeks to engage constructively with the EU Commission and other regulators. We are therefore voluntarily suspending the rewards functions in TikTok Lite while we address the concerns that they have raised," the company posted on X on Wednesday. The original article follows.

TikTok is officially under investigation by the EU and that means everything that goes with it, including the company's spinoff app, TikTok Lite.

As of February, the European Commission (the EU's executive branch) has been conducting a probe into TikTok's compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). And on Wednesday, the Commission gave TikTok 24 hours to come up with a risk assessment specifically on TikTok Lite, one it says should have been done before launch in the EU.

Launched quietly in in France and Spain in April, TikTok Lite is the data-light version of the app that's designed for areas with slower internet speeds. First launched in Thailand in 2018, TikTok Lite currently has over 1 billion downloads to date with the top countries being India, Brazil, and Indonesia, according to data aggregator Sensor Tower.

The section of the app that's particularly drawn the ire of the EU is TikTok Lite's "Tasks and Rewards", Reuters reports. Here, users over 18 can earn points through watching and liking videos, following TikTok creators, and referring people to the app (this last one is also available on the main TikTok app through Rewards). Users can then cash in these points for things like Amazon vouchers or TikTok coins, the in-app currency that lets you pay creators.

In its announcement, the European Commission stipulated concerns over TikTok Lite's possible impact on the mental health of users, including children, "in particular in relation to the potential stimulation of addictive behaviour" — this is a major focus of the EU's overarching investigation into TikTok. As well as the risk assessment, TikTok is also required to supply information about "measures the platform has put in place to mitigate such systemic risks".

"As a platform that reaches millions of children and teenagers, TikTok must fully comply with the DSA and has a particular role to play in the protection of minors online," said Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, in a press statement. "We are launching this formal infringement proceeding today to ensure that proportionate action is taken to protect the physical and emotional well-being of young Europeans."

Breton posted a...less formal statement on X (formerly Twitter) following the Commission's information request.

Citing the DSA, the Commission made sure to note it "can impose fines for incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information in response to a request for information."
