How to watch 'The Idea of You': When and where is it streaming?

Anne Hathaway is making a triumphant return to the rom-com world, y'all. She hasn't starred in a rom-com in nearly a decade and a half, so The Idea of You is kind of a big deal in that sense. The receptiveness at the SXSW premiere even made her cry.

Whether the melodramatic rom-com era is officially back is for you to decide. Here's everything you need to know about how to watch The Idea of You, from which streaming service you need to when it premieres.

What is The Idea of You about?

Robinne Lee's 2017 novel (and earlier Harry Styles fan fiction) and Anne Hathaway join forces in the swoon-worthy rom-com The Idea of You. The film follows the romance between 40-year-old art dealer and mother Solène (Hathaway) and 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine, Mary & George), English heartthrob and star of boy band August Moon.

Their twist of fate meeting at Coachella spirals into a clandestine affair, but their extremely different lives put pressure on their relationship. Can it survive the scrutiny and judgment from the public? As Entertainment Reporter Belen Edwards wrote in our summer movie preview, "Tune in for the surreal One Direction similarities, stay for Hathaway and Galitzine's sparkling chemistry, then get way too invested in the many bops from fictional band August Moon."

Here's a sneak peek at the official trailer:

Is The Idea of You worth watching?

For Anne Hathaway's performance alone, we recommend watching The Idea of You. Mashable Film Critic Siddhant Adlakha writes, "Enough cannot be said about what a tremendous performance Hathaway delivers here, practically warping the movie around her blazing screen presence."

Sure, on the surface, the premise is a bit cliché, but the pop-star fantasy is "a career-best performance...destined to be remembered among the actress’s career highlights." And that's kind of a big deal for a rom-com. In fact, he makes a sweeping declaration in his review of the film, calling The Idea of You a career rebirth for Hathaway. "She’s able to fashion a genre otherwise considered disposable fluff into something deeply moving, writing a new chapter for herself as a character who wrestles with whether or not she deserves a new lease on life."

While just shy of 20 critic ratings have made it to Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, it's currently sitting at an impressive 90%. Will it stay as high once more reviews roll in? We'll see.

Read our full review of The Idea of You.

What streaming service is The Idea of You on?

Rather than getting a proper theatrical release, The Idea of You is being released straight to Prime Video, which Adlakha says is "a shame...because listening to (and more importantly, feeling) an entire audience being swept up in the movie is one hell of a fun experience."

That means you'll need either an Amazon Prime account or a separate Prime Video subscription to stream the film. Already a Prime member? Sweet; you're good to go. Just sign into your account on your browser and navigate to the Prime Video tab or download the Prime Video app on your device in order to watch. Not yet a subscriber? We've rounded up the best ways to sign up (and save some money) below.

When is The Idea of You streaming?

The Anne Hathaway-led flick (and thinly veiled Harry Styles fanfic) premieres on Prime Video at 3:00 a.m. ET on May 2, 2024.

Can I get Prime Video for free?

Amazon offers customers a free 30-day trial of its Prime membership, which gives you unlimited access to the Prime Video library. You'll be able to stream The Idea of You and plenty of other Prime Video originals at no cost. There's just one catch: the trial is only available to brand-new Prime members or those returning a year or more after canceling.

Just be sure to cancel your Prime subscription before the free trial ends if you want to avoid paying a cent. Otherwise, you'll owe $14.99 per month.

There aren't many Prime Video streaming deals floating around, but we've rounded up the few options you have to save a little bit of dough.

Prime Video deal for students: Save 50% through Prime Student Opens in a new window Credit: Amazon Prime Student Free 6-month trial, then $69 per year Get Deal

Students with a verifiable email address can nab a free six-month trial to Prime through Prime Student, which gives you access to all of the Prime perks and then some. That means you can enjoy half a year of streaming via Prime Video, in addition to free two-day shipping, exclusive deals and discounts, and more. Note: You'll have to be able to prove you're actually a student through SheerID, so don't try using your decade-old student email address. After the trial ends, you'll have to pay half price for a Prime Student membership — just $69 per year or $7.49 per month.

Best for everyone else: Prime Video only Opens in a new window Credit: Amazon Prime Video only $8.99 per month Get Deal

For those ineligible for the free trial or Prime Student membership, you sadly won't be able to watch The Idea of You for free. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. However, you can save some money by opting to subscribe to Prime Video as a standalone service, rather than paying for a full Prime account. A full Prime membership goes for $14.99 per month (or $139 per year, which breaks down to $11.58 per month). Meanwhile, Prime Video as a separate service is only $8.99 per month. While that's not as great as getting it for free, it's certainly better than paying the full Prime pricing.

Since Amazon wants you to become a Prime member, signing up for Prime Video as a standalone service can be unnecessarily tricky. Basically, when you go to sign up for a subscription, be sure to select the option to "see more plans" or "change plan" and navigate to the Prime Video only option. Like Prime, you can cancel whenever you please with no strings attached.

Best long-term value: Amazon Prime annual membership Opens in a new window Credit: Amazon Amazon Prime annual membership $139 per year (save 22%) Get Deal

If you want access to all of the Prime perks but don't want to pay the full $14.99 per month, you can choose an annual membership for $139 instead. That breaks down to just $11.58 per month, which saves you about 22%. You'll still get access to Prime Video to watch The Idea of You, as well as all of the other perks, like fast and free shipping, free Grubhub+, access to Amazon Music, and exclusive deals and savings for an entire year. If you're currently on the monthly plan, navigate to your Prime membership under your account details to change plans.

NASA's Voyager is in hostile territory. It's 'dodging bullets.'

Mashable - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 11:00

NASA's Voyager craft have ventured where no other human machines have ever gone — the space between the stars. But that comes with a cost.

At some 15 and 12 billion miles away, Voyager 1 and 2 are beyond the protective bubble of the sun, called the heliosphere. Out in this realm of interstellar space, the nearly 50-year-old probes have a higher probability of damage from hostile, high-speed particles, called galactic cosmic rays, owing to a higher number of particles zooming by every second.

"We are dodging bullets out there," Alan Cummings, a cosmic-ray physicist at Caltech — the research university that manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory — told Mashable. Cummings began working on the Voyager mission 51 years ago.

SEE ALSO: NASA spacecraft keeps on going faster and faster and faster

But direct hits are inevitable. In 2010, while on the edge of our solar system's heliosphere, Voyager 2 unexpectedly began sending gibberish back to Earth. Cummings suspects that a passing galactic cosmic ray tripped part of a computer's memory — though NASA was eventually able to rectify the problem. Most recently, Voyager 1 failed to send back readable data for five months, a particularly worrying incident that may also have been triggered by a cosmic ray. Something corrupted a computer chip.

"We don't know everything," Cummings explained, referencing the difficulty in perfectly diagnosing such profoundly distant mishaps. "But I do think galactic cosmic rays are the guilty party here for most of these problems."

"We are dodging bullets out there."

Galactic cosmic rays are merciless because they're extremely tiny, charged particles, traveling at incredible speeds — nearly the speed of light. "The galaxy is permeated with galactic cosmic rays," Cummings marveled. Astronomers think violently exploding stars — supernovae — are responsible for creating many of these particles, as the colossal shock wave from the event accelerates the particles. Stripped of their outer shells, they hurtle through space as just the nuclei of atoms.

The heavier ones, like iron atoms transformed into galactic cosmic rays, can cause more damage than the lighter, more abundant ones. (It's somewhat like getting hit by a bowling ball at 50 mph, versus a golf ball.) They can zip right through a computer chip — altering its code — or even become lodged there, where they can pack an even bigger punch by doing permanent damage.

Of course, NASA spacecraft like the Voyagers are equipped with radiation-resistant parts and shielding, including wrapping around critical cables. These layers can keep out some particles — but not all. "You can protect yourself to some extent, but a high-enough-energy particle will get through your defenses," Cummings explained. Early in the Voyager mission, the space agency's engineers were worried about the craft passing by Jupiter, a planet that produces intense radiation. A person hypothetically riding aboard Voyager would have gotten hit with a radiation dose 1,000 times the lethal level. "That was pretty hostile," Cummings recalled. He said a few detectors on his galactic-ray measuring instrument (the Cosmic Ray Subsystem) were wounded, but overall, both the instrument and entire spacecraft survived to produce new scientific results, including vibrant, unprecedented imagery.

Yet out in the deeper cosmos, the Voyagers face a different threat. Around the gas giant Jupiter, the craft were sprayed with charged particles, but they were lower energy. Now in interstellar space, the craft are more often exposed to those high-energy particles. Any place in space — whether in our solar system or beyond — can meet the threat of a harmful galactic cosmic ray. But the odds are boosted in the interstellar realm.

"Explorers run into problems when they enter into new territory."

When might another such hit come? "It's just a random chance out there right now," Cummings said.

Billions of miles away, on Earth, in sunny Pasadena, California, however, the craft have a guardian. Or, a legion of guardians. NASA engineers have for decades devised ways to keep the aging, radiation-pummeled craft alive. They communicate with vintage computers aboard the nearly half-century old probes. Talking to an interstellar craft isn't like sending a text: It takes almost two days to transmit and then receive a message. Most recently, in April, NASA engineers squared off with a permanently-damaged computer chip on Voyager 1. By beaming messages to the craft, over 15 billion miles away, they successfully stored the defunct chip's unique code in other chips, as "no single location is large enough to hold the section of code in its entirety," the agency explained. The craft is once again communicating about its health, but not yet returning science data.

"You have to praise the engineers," Cummings emphasized.

They've certainly been busy. And in hostile space, with high-speed particles ceaselessly whizzing by, they'll likely continue to be. The craft are running low on nuclear fuel, but could — if undamaged — beam back unprecedented readings from uncharted space through the mid-2030s.

"Explorers run into problems when they enter into new territory," Cummings said. "Lewis and Clark didn't have an easy time, either."

15 of the best horror movies on Hulu to freak you the hell out

Mashable - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 11:00

Do you want to watch something scary? Well, you horror stan, Hulu is a great place to start looking.

Right now, the streaming service has a solid lineup of new and old frights, ranging from recent Hulu originals like False Positive, starring Ilana Glazer, to cross-genre international hits like Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. Of course, not all horror experiences freak us out in the same way — or to the same degree — so you'll want to know what you're getting yourself into before pressing play.

To help you out, we've combed through Hulu's catalog and selected the 10 all-around best horror movies available (in no particular order).

Good luck out there, and remember: Never go alone!

1. False Positive Credit: Hulu

From Mother! to Rosemary's Baby, reproduction has been explored by enough horror titles to qualify pregnancy-terror as its own subgenre. In director John Lee's False Positive, co-written with star Ilana Glazer, the gross-out body stuff you've seen done countless times gets fresh framing with a snappy script that addresses modern mothering imperfectly but thoughtfully. Plus, Pierce Brosnan plays a campy, creepy OB-GYN villain you've just gotta see.

Where to watch: False Positive is streaming on Hulu.

2. Villains Credit: Hulu

Venerable horror icons Bill Skarsgård and Maika Monroe lead Villains, a Bonnie and Clyde-meets-Don't Breathe mashup with a sprinkling of '50s style you'll love. When criminal lovebirds Jules and Mickey decide to rob a house, they encounter a mystery within and must contend with the home's residents, played by Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan, to solve it.

Where to watch: Villains is streaming on Hulu.

3. Prey Credit: Photo By David Bukach © 2022 20th Century Studios

The widely successful prequel to the Predator franchise, Prey is set in 1719 and follows Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she tries to protect her community from our favorite clicking, creepy alien nightmare. Hulu also has the entire Predator franchise available for streaming if you’re up for a marathon. — Yasmeen Hamadeh, Entertainment Intern

4. Infinity Pool Credit: NEON

Like The White Lotus on meth, director Brandon Cronenberg's nightmarish Infinity Pool sends a pair of married well-to-do beauties named James (Alexander Skarsgard) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) to an exclusive tropical resort to see what chaos they can wrangle up, all in the name of avoiding their marital problems. And does it ever wrangle up, first in the form of another pair of married well-to-do beauties – Gabi (Mia Goth) and Alban (Jalil Lespert). The foursome flirt over dinner, as beautiful rich people do, and the next day they find themselves breaking the resort's rules to head off into the countryside to taste a little local color.

Unfortunately, the local color they find is all red – blood, gore, and some unknown science-fiction goo that traps them in a sticky tangle of consciousness cloning that'll have them wishing all the locals had wanted was their kidneys. Like all of Cronenberg Jr.'s movies to date, Infinity Pool proves itself to be a surreal puzzle that spirals outward into endless complexity, dissolving not just the walls of the body but those of the mind too. The barriers between our flesh and our fantasies turn to liquid in his hands – we're mostly water after all, and Infinity Pool means to drown us in its deep end.  — Jason Adams

How to watch: Infinity Pool is now streaming on Hulu.

5. Sea Fever

If you're a fan of the ever-reliable subgenre of aquatic horror (think Leviathan or The Deep) and you've never seen Neasa Hardiman's 2019 Sea Fever, then are you ever in for a treat. Starring the capable twosome of Connie Nielsen and Dougray Scott as a fishing boat captain and her husband who trawl the waters off of Ireland, the search for one big haul takes them and their crew into uncharted waters where, you guessed it, something sinister lurks below the surface. Meaning the surface of the water and then, unnervingly, beneath the surface of their skin. Convincingly marrying science with its horror a la Barry Levinson's equally underrated The Bay, Sea Fever manages to drag all manner of slippery grossness up; it becomes terrifying because the movie makes it seem terrifyingly plausible. — J.A.

How to watch: Sea Fever is now streaming on Hulu.

6. Come True

If you've ever experienced sleep paralysis, where your consciousness floats to the surface just enough to convince you that you're paralyzed in your bed, then you know what a terrifying experience it can be. Uncannier still is how a lot of people have shared similar hallucinations of shadowy figures with glowing eyes while in that state; it's one of those creepy real-life examples of a collective unconscious, or at least that our brains are wired similarly enough to have us fearing the same things. And where there's a collective fear to be exploited, horror films will find a way. Anthony Scott Burns' Come True taps into this shared trauma, bringing these waking nightmares to fearsome life.

Starring Julia Sarah Stone as Sarah, a young woman in need of cash who agrees to participate in a mysterious sleep study, Come True takes its time soaking us in its strange environs. Lots of long corridors and parking lots – I believe the popular internet terminology is "liminal spaces." And the movie becomes all the creepier for its methodical, trance-like plotting, aided along by its killer synth score from Electric Youth. Getting trapped inside somebody else's dream hasn't been so terrifying since the heyday of Freddy Krueger. — J.A.

How to watch: Come True is now streaming on Hulu.

7. The Descent

A year after Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) loses her husband and daughter in a car accident, her besties Juno (Natalie Mendoza) and Beth (Alex Reid) make a plan for her to have some fun and step out from under the profound weight of her grief by taking her on a caving adventure in North Carolina. Tagging along are sisters Sam (MyAnna Buring) and Rebecca (Saskia Mulder), plus the brash Holly (Nora-Jane Noone) – just six gals out for some good, old-fashioned, spelunking fun! What could possibly go wrong? Oh, wait, there are sightless bloodthirsty mole-men, you say? They should really include them in the brochure.

Buried deep inside the aughts era of bro horror, Neil Marshall's The Descent felt revolutionary in its moment just for giving us a cast of nothing but tough, capable, kick-ass women. And Marshall's movie does so much more than that. Even before any mole-people show up, he's already mined a world of claustrophobia from the setting itself; you're almost relieved when the monsters pop up, so you can focus on something else for a second and stop having a panic attack about the walls falling in on you. The Descent remains an absolute and total banger 20 years on. — J.A.

How to watch: The Descent is now streaming on Hulu.

8. Cobweb Credit: Courtesy of Lionsgate.

Vibing on similar themes as The Babadook and Coraline, director Samuel Bodin's debut feature stars C'mon C'mon's Woody Norman as a bullied eight-year-old named Peter whose overprotective parents Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr) don't much help matters. Refusing to let him partake in normal childhood activities like trick-or-treating, they keep him cooped up in the house most of the time, constantly warning him about a young girl who went missing in their neighborhood some years before.

And then one night as Peter tries to sleep, a tap-tap-tapping on the inside of his bedroom wall begins, followed soon thereafter by a little girl's voice. And this little girl has nothing nice to say about Peter's parents. Slowly, Peter starts sensing his parents' strange behavior might be covering up a horrible secret, and before you can say "yellow wallpaper," the boy's suspicions begin unraveling his entire home life around him. Like a Grimm fairy tale sprung to life, this fabulous bedtime story features ace performances from all three of its leads (especially Caplan, who's clearly having a blast) and more goth atmosphere than you can shake a pumpkin full of bones at. An unduly overlooked gem! — J.A.

How to watch: Cobweb is now streaming on Hulu.

9. Skinamarink

Based on anecdotal data, Skinamarink works on about one out of every ten people who watch it. Those who do click with it may be few and far between, but this ultra low-budget indie leaves them shuddering in terror, unable to shake off its sense of absolute wrongness for days after. So lucky, we few! I do indeed count myself among those who found Kyle Edward Ball's experimental 2022 flick unnerving as hell. It got to me and then some.

SEE ALSO: What the heck is a 'Skinamarink'? Explaining the abstract horror gem

The story, as much as there is one, involves two little kids named Kevin and Kaylee who seem to have been left home alone one night, as long as you don't count the sinister presence stalking the hallways, whispering to them from the darkness, and making the doors and windows of their home disappear. Time seems to stretch out infinitely, which can feel either entertainingly terrifying or like 100 minutes of staring at walls with the occasional glimpse of a haunted toy. If you are one of those able to vibe on Skinamarink's wavelength, then watch out. Those walls will stare right back. — J.A.

How to watch: Skinamarink is now streaming on Hulu.

10. 28 Weeks Later

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's 2007 sequel to Danny Boyle's revolutionary zombie movie 28 Days Later has never gotten the proper appreciation it deserves. Yes, tonally, it's a different beast, but I've always dug its concept of society crumbling all because of one man's simpering cowardice. Doesn't it just feel that way sometimes?

Starring Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle as a man guilt-stricken over having run from a horde of infected and having left his wife to die, the film admittedly has a bit of a Jaws IV thing going on where the plague (slash shark) seems to have it out for one particular family, thereby straining all logic. But logic be damned, this one feels more like poetry, like a fairy tale turned to terrible life. — J.A.

How to watch: 28 Weeks Later is now streaming on Hulu.

11. Alien

Witness the birth of three, yes three, horror icons! Ridley Scott's 1979 haunted-house-in-space masterpiece Alien gives us first the Xenomorph, the murderous outer space creature with acid for blood and a mean streak a million light-years long. And it gives us Ellen Ripley, the ultimate Final Girl brought to life by actress Sigourney Weaver, in what would be the first of four on-screen appearances by this character. Finally (and most importantly) it gives us Jonesy the cat, who's had enough of this shit for nine lifetimes.

Still the best movie Scott's ever made, this horror classic about a group of space truckers who encounter one hell of a stowaway has lost none of its terrifying power in the four and a half decades since its making. Awash in killer character actors doing their thing (Yaphet Kotto! Veronica Cartwright! Ian Holm!) before getting torn to shreds one by one, every sequence of this movie, from chest-burster to Mother's countdown, deserves to be in the Horror Movie Hall of Fame. Just as long as they stay out of Jonesy's way. — J.A.

12. Piggy Credit: Jorge Fuembuena. Photo courtesy of Magnet Releasing.

Sara (Laura Galán) is an overweight teenager living a deeply unhappy existence in a rural Spanish town; she can't even go for a swim on the hottest day of the summer without being mercilessly bullied by a gang of mean girls. (The film's title is their cruel nickname for Sara.) Those mean girls get theirs, though; they're kidnapped by a mysterious man who leaves behind one witness who could help save them: Sara herself.

And so writer/director Carlota Pereda's 2022 film, a feature-length reenvisioning of her own short film from a few years earlier, introduces its troubling moral quandary — should Sara show mercy for those who tormented her? Or should she give in to her thirst for revenge and leave them to rot on the vine? Pereda manages to complicate our feelings on the matter with every twist, all while delivering a terrific and tense exercise from the small-town drama surrounding the mystery of the missing girls. Galán gives a wonder of a performance, making Sara difficult to love but tremendously easy to empathize with. — J.A.

13. The Vigil Credit: Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.

One of the rare horror movies that uses Judaism and/or Jewish its folklore as a linchpin, The Vigil uses the ancient Jewish tradition of sitting with a body before its burial as a setting for terror. Dave Davis plays Yakov Ronen, a former member of an Orthodox community in Brooklyn who's struggling with an unnamed trauma — and with keeping a job and paying rent.

When Yakov is asked to sit shomer for a recently deceased Holocaust survivor, he takes the job because he needs the money. And that's when the shadows start moving. Suffused with a proper sense of dread and heart-pounding stretches of silence, writer/director Keith Thomas' The Vigil revels in showcasing aspects of Jewish mysticism we've never seen play out in a horror movie before. It's out with the dybbuk and in with the demonic mazzik (which translates to "destroyer" in Hebrew), which becomes a stand-in for the ancient scourge of antisemitism itself. — J.A.

How to watch: The Vigil is now streaming on Hulu.

14. The Clovehitch Killer

Inspired by the double life of sadistic serial killer Dennis Rader, who stalked and murdered people in Kansas over the course of two decades, The Clovehitch Killer stars Charlie Plummer as a teenager named Tyler who begins to suspect that his father (Dylan McDermott) might not be the innocent family man he presents himself as. We watch as Tyler begins digging up his father's secrets — sometimes literally — and we play witness to his slow corruption by proxy.

Twisting your typical coming-of-age movie into something far more disturbing, director Duncan Skiles charts Tyler's burgeoning adulthood as an extended act of perversion, with the rite of passage into manhood as a dark and dirty spoiling of innocence. And Plummer gives yet another of his wounded, understated performances in a young career already thick with them. — J.A.

14. The Autopsy of Jane Doe

The pressure to continue running the family business is given a whole new spin in director André Øvredal's The Autopsy of Jane Doe; in it, Brian Cox (pre-Succession success) stars as Tommy, a coroner who works with his son Austin (Emile Hirsch). It's a weird, isolating life, carving up corpses — one which Austin has watched muck up his parents' relationship in close detail. And now that he's got a new girlfriend, Austin is thinking about maybe doing something else with his life besides death.

That's the emotional playing field laid out when our titular Jane Doe appears. Taking the advice to leave behind a beautiful corpse to its extreme, this dead body that shows up one dark and stormy night is outwardly perfect. Not a sign of trauma in sight. Weird, right? But when Tommy and Austin get out their scalpels and bonesaws and start digging around underneath, well, that's when the black clouds really roll in. The mystery of the body and its methodical undoing is riveting stuff — if you've got the stomach for it, anyway — and Øvredal turns this tight little thriller into a masterclass in subversion. — J.A.

How to watch: The Autopsy of Jane Doe is now streaming on Hulu.

15. Censor

The conservative argument that disturbing content (like horror movies, for instance) will rot a person's brain and turn them into a psychopath is brought to diabolical life in writer/director Prano Bailey-Bond's psychedelic 2021 thriller Censor. Set in the mid-'80s, when controversy over "video nasties" has taken England by storm, Censor stars a stellar Niamh Algar (Mary & George) as a prim woman named Enid who works for the British Board of Film Classification. Basically, it's her job to watch all of the really fucked-up movies and tell the filmmakers what they have to edit out if they want to be certified for public exhibition.

And so day after day Enid sifts through the worst stuff imaginable, going frame by repulsive frame. It doesn't help that she's got her own childhood trauma involving a missing sister lurking about, which one film that she watches in particular seems to trigger a few repressed memories of real hard. And before you know it, our precious Enid finds herself falling down the filthy rabbit hole of exploitation cinema, her sanity a mere splatter upon its walls. And thank goodness nobody was around to censor Censor, because this is one fucked-up good time.  — J.A.

How to watch: Censor is now streaming on Hulu.

How to watch your favorite A24 films, from 'The Zone of Interest' to 'Talk to Me'

Mashable - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 11:00

UPDATE: Apr. 27, 2024, 5:00 a.m. EDT This story has been updated with the latest A24 releases — 'Talk to Me,' 'The Iron Claw,' and 'Problemista' — as well as new streaming details.

Quick links to watch A24 films: BEST FOR 2022-2023 A24 FILMS Paramount+ with Showtime $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year Get Deal BEST FOR OLDER A24 FILMS Kanopy Free with a library card or university login Get Deal BEST FOR 2023-2024 A24 FILMS Max $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year Get Deal

A24, the cult favorite indie film studio, had one helluva 2023. It kicked things off by winning the Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once and has steadily been rolling out new gems ever since. Some of our favorite films of 2023 hail from A24, like the anxiety-inducing thriller Beau Is Afraid, the charming romance Past Lives, and the chilling Oscar-winning Holocaust film The Zone of Interest. And we can't forget the critically acclaimed horror flick Talk to Me.

SEE ALSO: The 25 best movies of 2023, and where to watch them

This year is shaping up to be another doozy for A24, with The Iron Claw, Problemista, and Love Lies Bleeding kicking things off.

If you slept on any of the A24 films released in the past year, we've got you covered with a roundup of which flicks are worth your time and where you can watch them, and what's in store for the coming months. Plus, if you're looking for classic A24 flicks, we've got a streaming hack that could let you watch them for free.

Which streaming service has the most A24 films?

In December 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery signed a deal with A24 to bring the distributor's theatrical releases to their Max streaming service in 2024. Thus, any new A24 release will be headed to Max in 2024. Unfortunately, the majority of previous releases are still housed on Paramount+ with Showtime, including most of the films released in 2022 and the first half of 2023. Depending on which films you're interested in, these two streamers are your best bet for watching A24 movies.

How to watch older A24 movies

Want to watch classic A24 movies such as Midsommar, Eighth Grade, The Lighthouse, 20th Century Women, mid90s, and lots more? If you have a library card or university ID, then you can stream thousands of movies for free on Kanopy, including a slew of older A24 films. You won't find the newest 2023 or 2024 films on Kanopy, but plenty of standouts are available to watch at your leisure, thanks to the generous support of your public library or university.

If you're looking to watch specific films from the past year or so, here's a breakdown of the best ways to watch recent A24 releases:

How to watch The Zone of Interest: Stream it on Max

Nominated for five Oscars (including Best Picture), The Zone of Interest took home two statuettes on Oscar night: Best Sound and Best International Feature Film. The film is loosely based on Martin Amis's 2014 novel of the same name and centers around Commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), who live in domestic bliss next door to the atrocities of Auschwitz. Mashable's Shannon Connellan calls it "a chilling portrait of complicity among atrocity."

The Zone of Interest makes its streaming debut on Max on April 5, 2024, nearly a year after its initial debut at Cannes Film Festival. Max subscriptions start at $9.99 per month with ads or $15.99 per month without ads. It's also available to rent or purchase via digital retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV+ for $5.99 or $19.99, respectively.

"Gorgeous" and "evocative" are hardly the words one would typically choose to describe a pro-wrestling movie, but that's how Mashable's reviewer Siddhant Adlakha described The Iron Claw. "With The Iron Claw, writer/director Sean Durkin not only brings to theaters the tragic story of one of pro wrestling's most famous families, but also Zac Efron's career-best work." The film follows the Von Erich brothers who fought for their wrestling dynasty and the "curse" said to have plagued them through the '70s and '80s.

The Iron Claw makes its streaming debut on Max on May 10, 2024. Plans start at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year with ads, or $15.99 per month or $149.99 per year without ads. You can also rent or purchase it at video on demand retailers like Prime Video or Apple TV for $5.99 or $19.99, respectively.

Julio Torres, co-creator and co-star of the celebrated comedy series Los Espookys, makes his directorial debut with Problemista, a whimsical tale of immigrants and outsiders in New York who make the city their home. Mashable's Film Editor Kristy Puchko has already dubbed it "one of the best films of 2024," pointing out that it's not just a quirky and clever story, but also "a deeply funny, feel-good movie that doesn't pull punches on its political or social satire."

Problemista opened in theaters nationwide on March 22, 2024. Just shy of a month later, it made its digital debut. As of April 19, it's available to rent or purchase at digital on-demand retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV for $19.99 or $24.99, respectively.

Set in New Mexico in the '80s, Love Lies Bleeding follows the kismet relationship between introverted gym manager Lou (Kristen Stewart) and amateur bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian). It also stars Ed Harris, who plays Lou's father who is wanted by the FBI, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco. The film comes from the mind of Rose Glass (writer/director of 2020 standout Saint Maud) and is what Mashable's Film Editor calls a "gnarly masterpiece."

While it's not yet streaming anywhere, you can rent or purchase the Kristen Stewart gem at digital on-demand retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV for $19.99 or $24.99, respectively.

Nicolas Cage plays Paul Matthews, a nondescript college professor who starts to suddenly appear in millions of strangers' dreams, in Dream Scenario. At first, he's tickled by the stardom, but before long, he starts to lose his grip on his own narrative and spiral downward. While it wasn't a box office mega hit, the film did earn a 92% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes — one of the best scores of Cage's career.

Dream Scenario made its streaming debut on Max on March 15, 2024, about four months after its theatrical premiere. Max offers three tiers of subscriptions, starting at $9.99 per month, as well as annual subscription options starting at $99.99 per year. Don't feel like signing up for Max? Peek behind the glittery Graceland gates in Priscilla, one of our favorite films of 2023. The film serves as a poignant portrait of Priscilla Presley, Elvis's young lover and wife, and ultimately pulls back the curtain on their alleged fairy tale romance. Adapted from Priscilla Presley's own memoir from 1985, Elvis and Me, Mashable's film editor called Priscilla a "stunning and thoughtful portrait of a misunderstood icon."

Priscilla made its streaming debut on Max in February 2024. Subscriptions for Max start at $9.99 per month and go up to $19.99 per month. However, if you don't want to sign up for another streaming service, you don't have to. Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson have adapted their off-Broadway musical Fucking Identical Twins into a wondrously weird film called Dicks: The Musical. "At first glance Dicks: The Musical might look like a bro-down between two misogynist ladies' men who discover they are long-lost twins. But it's actually a merciless and maniacal parody of the kinds of fratty comedy that treat women as nags, T&A, or punchlines," explains Mashable's film critic Kristy Puchko, adding that "Dicks goes hard at satirizing queer culture, looping in musical theater, f-bombs, multiple sex montages, and sewer boys." Translation: it's bonkers.

Dicks: The Musical is currently streaming on Max alongside plenty of other A24 gems. You can also rent or buy the film on demand at Prime Video, Apple TV+, or other digital retailers.

The feature-length debut from filmmaker and poet Raven Jackson delivers a "perfect storm of memory, family, and the places that shape us," as Mashable's Belen Edwards wrote in her review. It's a coming of age story of a young Black woman named Mackenzie, taking place in the '70s and '80s in Mississippi. And while "her story is almost entirely devoid of dialogue...Jackson finds meaning in silence and sensory experiences."

While All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is not available to stream quite yet, you can still rent or purchase it through digital services like Prime Video or Apple TV+. It'll cost you $5.99 to rent or $19.99 to purchase.

Mashable Film Editor Kristy Puchko said it best: Beau Is Afraid is "a film that is shocking, immersive and so emotionally raw that it's essentially a three-hour-long panic attack as cinema." The movie was written and directed by Ari Aster, who previously made Hereditary and Midsommar for A24. Beau Is Afraid is about a paranoid man trying to make his way to his overbearing mother's house, accompanied by an internal chorus of chaos.

Currently, Beau is Afraid is available to stream on Paramount+ with Showtime, which costs either $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year (save 17%). Video on demand services like Prime Video and Apple TV+ also have the film available to rent or purchase.

Past Lives isn't just one of the best A24 films to come out last year, but one of the very best films of 2023. It was even nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. As Puchko noted in her review, it "avoids the buzz backlash by being sharply funny and refusing to play by rom-dram rules" and is the kind of film you "long to revisit."

Like Beau is Afraid, Past Lives is available to stream on Paramount+ with Showtime. If you'd rather rent or purchase the film, it's also available at digital retailers like Prime Video and Apple TV+ for $4.99 or $19.99, respectively.

"Medusa Deluxe is an extravagant, relentlessly propulsive, and wildly entertaining film, rich with provocative performances, jaw-dropping ambition, astounding visuals — both squalid and sublime — and a dizzying blend of dark humor and persistent empathy," writes Film Editor Kristy Puchko in her review. With a plot focused on a murder investigation at a rinky-dink hair competition and no central protagonist, it's a "wildly ambitious" project that is not to be missed.

TL;DR: A lifetime subscription to an AdGuard Family Plan is on sale for £20.10, saving you 68% on list price.

The average person will see between 4,000 and 10,000 ads a day, every day. That number may sound totally ridiculous, but most of those come from just using the internet. As remarkable as it is that you can just find videos of porcupines eating pumpkins whenever you want, the internet is rife with ads — and it takes some pretty advanced software to block most of them.

AdGuard helps you control what you see online, and the AdGuard Family Plan does even more than help you bring your daily ad quota down. If you want to start blocking ads on multiple devices, protecting your network, and managing what kind of content your devices can access, then get a lifetime subscription to the AdGuard Family Plan for only £20.10.

AdGuard’s Family Plan offers three services. First, you get a remarkably thorough ad blocker that should take care of all those annoying website banners, pop-ups, and video ads. You might be surprised how fast you can get through a YouTube playlist when you aren’t stopping for multiple unskippable ads between every video. And if AdGuard does miss an ad, it gives you the tools to block it manually.

Ads are annoying, but malware and phishing websites can do a lot worse than waste your time. Cybersecurity threats may have grown more common, but the tools to prevent them have also gotten better. AdGuard helps protect your nine connected devices from malware, phishing, and trackers online. You can even see who exactly is trying to track you from your AdGuard app.

If your kids are going to go online, you can use your AdGuard subscription to help keep them safe while they browse. Set up custom filters that restrict access to inappropriate and adult content. Whether your kids are going online for school or for fun, you can decide what they see with a flip of a switch in your AdGuard app.

Browse without ads, trackers, or worrying about what your kids will encounter online. Get a lifetime AdGuard Family Plan on sale for £20.10.

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Elon Musk reportedly on the verge of raising billions for his AI company

Mashable - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 00:25

Elon Musk's OpenAI competitor is getting ready to raise some big money from Silicon Valley.

According to new, anonymously-sourced reports from The Information and TechCrunch, Musk's AI company xAI is currently raising $6 billion on a $18 billion pre-money valuation, and the deal is expected to close in a matter of weeks.

SEE ALSO: If you're a paying X user, Elon Musk wants his Grok AI to write your posts for you, report says

Musk's ten-month-old AI company is looking to take OpenAI on directly after Musk openly criticized and feuded with the AI giant that he helped create. Musk has long ragged on OpenAI's change in ethos, criticizing the company's move from an open, nonprofit model to a more secretive, profit-seeking approach.

According to reports, Musk and associates have been pitching xAI to investors as an AI brand that will one day integrate with Musk's various companies like Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink. TechCrunch reports that the pitch claims that xAI will be different from other AI companies because it will "master the physical world." The pitch says that one day xAI will train on the data from all of Musk's companies and then be able to aid Tesla in creating (still nonexistent) full self-driving cars and its (still underdevelopment) robot Optimus.

It should come as no surprise if Musk has no problem raising big money from tech venture capitalists. Musk has many friends in Silicon Valley, and even though his reputation has taken hits recently, sympathetic VC firms have long been a feature of his support network. As TechCrunch notes, one of the participants in this round of funding is Future Ventures, which was co-founded by Musk's old associate Steve Jurvetson.

However, as xAI gets ready to raise billions, it's important to note that its only real product at this point is Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into Musk's social media company X, formerly known as Twitter. And, as Mashable and other outlets have reported, Grok isn't really any good. Just recently the AI chatbot could not tell the difference between real news and a joke, and reported a humorous post as actual legitimate news. Grok also recently made up a fake story about Iran striking Tel Aviv with missiles, which X then promoted to its hundreds of millions of users.

But, regardless of Grok's failures, Musk is utilizing the hype around xAI to bail X out. According to TechCrunch, X owns a stake in xAI, so the social media company, which has seen revenue fall off a cliff under Musk's ownership, will profit from...whatever happens with xAI.

Quick, the PlayStation Portal is back in stock at two different stores

Mashable - Fri, 04/26/2024 - 22:39

UPDATE: Apr. 26, 2024, 4:40 p.m. EDT We've updated this story after confirming that next week's Early Access Event at Walmart will be limited to paid members of its Walmart+ program. In other words, you'll have to upgrade from the free trial tier to buy the PlayStation Portal during the sale.

Quick links: PlayStation Portal restock In Stock PlayStation Portal Remote Player $199.99 at Best Buy Buy Now In Stock PlayStation Portal Remote Player $199.99 at PlayStation Direct Buy Now Coming Soon PlayStation Portal Remote Player $199 at Walmart starting April 29 at 12 p.m. ET (paid Walmart+ membership required) Learn More

Sony's PlayStation Portal Remote Player has been relatively difficult to buy, flitting in and out of stock at various retailers ever since its mid-November launch. But luck is currently on wannabe buyers' sides: It's back up for grabs at Best Buy and PlayStation Direct as of April 26.

Priced at $199.99, the Portal is a handheld PlayStation 5 accessory that lets players stream their games on the go via the console's Remote Play feature; it looks like a DualSense controller that's been spliced in half by an eight-inch LCD screen. Function-wise, it's nothing revolutionary — you can do the exact same thing on a smartphone (for free!) — and its ability to work successfully largely depends on the strength of your internet connection. Still, Mashable's Alex Perry was a reluctant fan.

"Portal's excellent form factor, good display, and overall usefulness have outweighed its numerous problems for me," Perry wrote in his review, hedging his recommendation with advice to wait for a discount. (Spoiler: That probably won't be happening anytime soon, judging by its persistent hard-to-findness.)

SEE ALSO: PlayStation Portal: It's both life-changing and frustrating at the same time

If the Portal happens to sell out at Best Buy and PlayStation Direct before you can add it to your cart, you'll have another chance to buy it at Walmart in the near future. From Monday, April 29 at 12 p.m. ET to the same time the following day, the big-box store will be hosting an Early Access Event for paid (non-trial) Walmart+ members that features limited availability of exclusive and hard-to-buy items.

Most of said items will be groceries, per a press release — think KeKe Palmer-autographed Chips Ahoy! bundles, a Dolly Parton baking mix collection, and mystery-flavored Flamin' Hot Doritos — but a Portal restock will (very randomly) sneak in there, too.

Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' is the internet's Song of the Summer

Mashable - Fri, 04/26/2024 - 20:54

There are four little words that the girls just can't get out of their heads: "That's that me espresso" — a little nonsensical, a lot catchy.

They seem to answer the season's hottest question: What's the Song of the Summer? Sabrina Carpenter's sun-drenched hit, "Espresso," is currently the top contender. While artists scramble to promote their summer bops on TikTok and stan Twitter battles it out, Carpenter is not-so-quietly poised to take the crown.

SEE ALSO: Taylor Swift's brand is mightier than her pen

The Extremely Online — a.k.a. X / Twitter users — are constantly referencing, reworking, and memeifying the song's lyrics.

Carpenter is no stranger to internet attention. She's a former Disney Channel star who, back in 2021, was the infamous "blonde girl" referenced in Olivia Rodrigo's "Driver's License." But in 2022, Carpenter released her album Emails I Can't Send, establishing herself as her own distinct pop princess.

As one user wrote, "I love the duality that Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter provide as counterparts… Olivia's songs are like 'I'm so insecure and crazy and I'm going to die' and Sabrina’s are like 'every boy is in love with me and that makes complete sense.'"

Tweet may have been deleted

Carpenter recently opened for Taylor Swift on the Latin America leg of The Eras Tour and performed at Coachella, catapulting her to stardom. (The other pop star hovering around a similar come-up is Chappell Roan, who opened for Rodrigo on her GUTS World Tour and also performed at Coachella.)

Carpenter routinely goes viral for her suggestive outros to her biggest hit, "Nonsense," which she tailors to the city where she's performing. Just last week at Coachella she sang, "Made his knees so weak he had to spread mine / He's drinking my bath water like it's red wine / Coachella see you back here when I headline," referencing her relationship with Saltburn star Barry Keoghan. (Keoghan brought even more attention to "Espresso" when he posted a photo of a cup of coffee on his Instagram story with the blonde queen emoji.)

But now fans and casual listeners alike can't stop returning to "me espresso," the odd phrasing birthing so many memes.

One user wrote, "don't talk to me until i've had my me espresso." Another clarified, "that’s that me espresso. that’s that me espresso. that? that’s that me espresso. oh that? that’s that me espresso. that thing you’ve got? right there? that’s that me espresso. yeah." Someone else captioned a video of a waitress pouring a cup of coffee on her foot, "that’s that me espresso."

Other users are obsessed with just how blonde both the song and Carpenter are. One user uploaded the meme "Actually, can I have five more of these little blonde bitches?" with the caption, "me listening to espresso." Another observed, "Me Espresso..a most pleasing track to me. It's not often you can hear the Blonde come through in the recording anymore." Someone else said, "that espresso song by the little blonde bitch goes crazy i'm sorry."

The coffee community is also embracing the track as their anthem. Multiple users have thanked Carpenter. One said, "13 year old girl came in to my barista job and asked 'can i get one espresso? wait actually what’s in an espresso?' so thank u sabrina carpenter."

Another wrote, "Sabrina Carpenter is my hero for teaching an entire generation of people that the word is ESpresso, not EXpresso."

Pop enjoyers, Irish "It" boys, blonde fanatics, and coffee lovers...we've got a hit on our hands.

No one's talking about the Apple Vision Pro anymore — and this may be why

Mashable - Fri, 04/26/2024 - 20:33

Apple took a leap just two months ago and launched an entire brand new product category for the company with the release of the Apple Vision Pro.

In the days and weeks after its February release, Apple's new AR/VR headset was the talk of social media. Tech reviewers raved about how using it was a glimpse into the future of home computers. And the Apple Vision Pro memes were in abundance. Who can forget the guy who wore an Apple Vision Pro at his wedding?

Then February came and went — and there's not much talk about anymore. It turns out that there's likely a good reason for the sudden silence around the product: the Apple Vision Pro simply isn't selling.

SEE ALSO: I used AI to plan my Costa Rica trip — why I'll never use it again Apple Vision Pro sales tank

According to prominent analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has revised its Apple Vision Pro shipment expectations for 2024 down to 400,000 to 450,000 units.

Apple originally expected to sell as many as 800,000 Apple Vision Pro units this year, reports Kuo, who has accurately broken news on the company over the years due to his supply chain contacts.

This means that Apple had to reduce its sales expectations for the Apple Vision Pro by as much as 50 percent.

Furthermore, Kuo reports that Apple revised these numbers before launching the Apple Vision Pro in markets outside the U.S. Kuo takes that to mean that U.S. sales have declined sharply, forcing Apple to adjust its expectations for international markets as well.

However, this shouldn't be too surprising.

Apple launched a brand new product in the emerging, relatively nascent product category of AR/VR headsets. On top of that, the starting price point of $3,499 heavily reduces the potential consumer base for the Apple Vision Pro. Most consumers just aren't willing to fork over thousands of dollars for a head-mounted display.

It's also interesting that the Apple Vision Pro swiftly faded from online discussion after much fanfare. As Fast Company points out, Google Trends data shows that general interest in the Apple Vision Pro completely dropped shortly after its release and has continued on a downward trend.

The incoming issues for Apple with the Apple Vision Pro were even visible to Mashable when we attended the big Apple Vision Pro launch at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in Manhattan where even Apple CEO Tim Cook was in attendance. There were lines for the event, but unlike other Apple release day events, those lines dissipated fairly quickly. Even more interesting was that quite a few people had lined up due to the hype and wanted to try the Apple Vision Pro out, with no intent of making a purchase.

It's unclear where Apple plans to takes its AR/VR headset ambitions from here. According to Kuo, there was a prediction that Apple would release a new Apple Vision Pro model in 2025 – something that the analyst is no longer expecting now.

Have a Ring camera? The FTC may send you a refund — how to claim it

Mashable - Fri, 04/26/2024 - 18:40

You may have a bit of money coming your way — and all you had to do to get it was endure a breach of your privacy.

The Federal Trade Commission announced this week that settlement payments stemming from a 2023 complaint against the doorbell camera company Ring have started going out to affected customers. Ring reached the settlement after the FTC accused it of "egregious violations of users' privacy," including allowing employees and contractors to see videos, which were used to train algorithms without customer consent.

SEE ALSO: The best sex toys on Amazon

How to get Ring settlement payout

As a result of the settlement, 117,044 Ring owners are getting direct payments for their troubles. These payments will be sent out via PayPal to affected users — and there's no need to manually make a claim for the money. Eligible customers should have received an email notification this week letting them know the money is available. It must be claimed from PayPal within 30 days.

The FTC says to call 1-833-637-4884 if you have a problem with your payment. That number belongs to Rust Consulting Inc., the company responsible for doling out the payments.

Needless to say, there are plenty of reasons not to own a Ring camera. But if you do own one, you might get a little bit of money out of it a few years later, at least.

What is a VPN? Here’s what you need to know

Mashable - Fri, 04/26/2024 - 18:35

What is a VPN? To simply scratch the surface, a virtual private network (VPN) spoofs your location, makes you anonymous online, and gives you the keys to unlock the full breadth of the web.

With all the third-party advertisers snooping on your personal data and scammers trying to steal it all, the best VPNs have become an easy way to protect your digital privacy. But what exactly is it? And how on earth can it make your internet service provider (ISP) believe you’re streaming in Japan when you’re actually sitting on your couch in another country?

SEE ALSO: The best cheap VPNs in April 2024 What is a VPN?

A VPN is an encrypted internet connection between your device and a remote server. By encrypting your traffic through a private tunnel, often through military-grade AES-256 encryption, all your online activities will be hidden from prying eyes. Unlike Incognito mode, this means your ISP, hackers lurking on public networks, and even government entities can’t see what you’re doing.

Connecting to these remote servers, which are provided by VPN services like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark, will also mask your real IP address and location. This unique identifier is given to you by your ISP to track your location, but a VPN server offers its own IP address. Therefore, when you connect to a server in another country, you can effectively fool websites and online services into thinking you’re in a completely different destination.

It’s a neat trick, especially when you’re trying to access geo-restricted websites or streaming services with country-specific content libraries to binge-watch your favorite shows. Better yet, many VPN providers have thousands of servers placed around the globe, giving you an ample amount of ways to browse through the multitude of international streaming platforms out there.

Another perk is ignoring ISP throttling. This is a nasty way for your internet provider to limit your bandwidth, but if your ISP can’t recognize you when using a VPN, then it can’t restrict your internet speeds. That’s a big bonus for online multiplayer games and anyone who experiences excruciatingly long buffering times.

It isn’t just about streaming and boosting speeds, as a VPN’s main purpose is to offer anonymity when browsing on public Wi-Fi, bypass region-restricted websites, and keep your online activity encrypted.

Essentially, no hacker threats, no government eyes snooping about your business, and no problems accessing the site of your choice — even if you’re heading to countries with heightened internet censorship including the UAE, Cuba, or China.

So, why are there hundreds of VPNs to choose from if they all basically do the same job? Each service can provide different perks, from the number of servers it provides and its various locations in select cities and countries to its compatibility with laptops, PCs, smartphones, and gaming consoles, along with multiple security options.

If you’re ready to give your device a security (and streaming) upgrade with a VPN, our list of the best VPNs (and best cheap VPNs for the budget-conscious) will point you in the right direction.
